The bark City of New York left first with Rear Admiral Byrd aboard, the Eleanor Bolling following an hour Both ships said farewell to Panai & blinding rain which drove to helner several hundred of those who stood on the pier to bid them farewell. At the stern of the City of New York was the ship's American flag, frayed by the Antarctic gales. The flag was the same which flew from the bark’s stern almost two years ago when it left New York. No ports of call are intended before arrival at New York, Admiral Byrd said. All members of the expedition, except five who preceded them home, are aboard the two ships. .Admiral Byrd expressed happiness that he had left none behind him on the ice barrier, the expedition having been carried out without loss of a single life.
