Before a board of Regular officers, assigned by the Nevy Department, the 1st Battalion, United States Naval Re- serves of the District of Columbia, to- morrow night will pass through their umlu.l inapect'l’m flbr xa::y weeks the 1 organization has been preparing for this annual event in its hi and the officers are hopeful that thi year the outfit will pass such a higl mark that it will win at least one of States Naval Reserve Officers’ tion to be awarded to the fleet division and battalion, respectively, having the highest figure of merit as shown by these inspections. Lieut. Samuel W. Stinemetz, acting commander of the organization, will put the outfit through its paces tomorrow night. He has been in command of the outfit since Lieut. Comdr. Finney Bas- com Smith left the city, and has been striving hard to bring it up to the top notch. The organization, in an effort to inerease its efficiency so as to make an excellent showing tomorrow night, even went _through a rehearsal inspection be- fore Lieut. Comdr. R. S. Field, inspector- instructor of the local battalion and commander of the training ship, the United States destroyer Abel P. Upshur, and other naval officers. The itinerary of the various cruises has not yet been made public, but it 15 known that the officers have been ur ing the Navy Department to provide some other destination than New Eng- land. They pointed out that the train- ing in that area during the Summer months many times was held up owing to the prevalence of fog. They also pointed out that it was desirable the men taken to some large city for the week end liberty whieh falls in the middle of the cruise. For the past several years this has been given them in some small seaport town, and it was pointed out that it would be more in- teresting to the men this year to go to some large city, probably New York. When the inspections are over, an- other step in the preparation for the annual cruise will be the departure of the Upshur for the Norfolk Navy Yard for its annual dry-docl d other repairs as are needed.
