Jermain Bio- Toga ), companion, Beckwith Haven, assistant fleld representative of the museum, has i:fi completed a 10-week expedition to Central and South America and the islands of the West Indies in search of eighteenth century cannon to be used in the restoration of old Fort Ticon- deroga, N. Y. Mr. Slocum is stopping in Washington & few days en route to Fort Ticonderoga on business relative to the transporta- tion of the cannon which he secured in the southern countries to the United States. Twenty cannon, located in Nicaragua and presented to the Fort Ticonderoga Museum by the Nicaraguan government, are expected to arrive in this country during the early part of the Summer. Mr. Slocum declared that he had recelved great assistance from President Moncada of the Nicaraguan republic in his search for guns of the desired period. He further stated that invaluable co-operation had been ex- tended to him and Mr. Haven through- out their two-week visit in the Central American country by members of the Marine Corps and the Army engineers now working upon the plans for the Pproposed interocean canal in Nicaragua. Questioned as to why guns to be used in the restoration of Fort Ticonderoga should be looked for in Central and South America, Mr. Slocum explained: 18th Century Cannon Identical. *“Iron and bronze cannon of the eighteenth century, whether cast in France, England or Spain, were identi- cal. Practically all the English and French cannon of that period are either privately owned in museums or have dl:.?penud. Some 75 cannon will be needed in the restoration of Fort Ti- conderoga, the outstanding monument in the United States of the French- Indian and Revolutionary wars. NICARAGUAN CANAL PROJECT DISCUSSED Dr. Sacasa, Diplomat, in Radio Ad- dress, Stresses Advantage of Route Chosen by United States. Advantages of the proposed canal route through Nicaragua, a survey of which Congress has authorized, were stressed by Dr. Don Juan B. Sacasa, Nicaraguan Minister to the United States, in a radio address last night over the Columbia Broadcasting Sys- tem. ‘The American engineers, he said, are fulfilling their duties in a highly com- mendable manner, and the Nicaraguan government is giving the commission all the facilities and help possible for thelr work. “According to Senator Edge, now your Ambassador to France,” Dr. Sacass. said, “economic, military and diplo- matic considerations attach profound significance to the Nicaraguan Canal project. ' He considers that by short- ening the time ‘and distance between certain Atlantic or Gulf ports and those of Central America, your own west coast and Alaska, as well as by open- ing a new sea route to important South American and Far Eastern countries, will prove & new stimulus to trade.” Dr. Sacasa e: confidence that if the engineers’ report is favorable and lay | the data and estimates show that the canal route is feasible and desirable, that the President and Congress will EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. ¢, MONDAY, MAY 5 1980.
