FINANCIAL. UTILITIES STRONG INCURB TRADING Electri¢' Bond and Share Is Leader in Rising Price Trend. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 16.—Led by Elec- tric Bond & Share, which sold above 117 for the first time this year, the util- ities staged a strong upturn on the Curb Exchange today. Electric Bond & Share opened on 6.900 shares and sold in heavy lots throughout the morning at steadily ris- tng prices until it had bettered yester- day’s closing price by 2}, points. Close behind it was United Light and Power “A,” which opened up fraction- ally at 5133 and climbed to over 53, a new high. Announcement that this company is planning to enter the natural gas field on a large scaie through its subsidiary, & Traction, caused the buying. The latter stock, although ex-dividend $2.50, opened 2 points higher and retained a net gain on the day. Midwest State Ul"lties at 26 was also at its- 1930 peak. Advances also were made by American & Forelgn Power ‘Warrants, American Gas & Electric, American Superpower, Brazil Light & ‘Traction, Commonwealth Edison, Duke Power, Middle West Utilities and Stand- ard Power & Light. MERCHANT VESSEL BUILDING INCREASES ‘The total of world construction of merchant vessels is now in excess of the pre-war level of shipbuilding for the first time since the end of the post-war boom in production, in 1923, says a statement just issued by Lloyd's Regis- ter of Shipping, covering returns from all maritime countries for the quarter ended March 31 last. In comparison with the 3,162,000 gross tons of merchant ships under way at the end of June, 1914, throughout the world, the present total shows a gain of over 100,000 tons. For the United States an increase of about 75,000 tons is shown. Great Britain and Ireland, however, are over 100,000 tons below the 1014 figure; but the other maritime na- tions, taken together, have made a gain of 136.000 tons. An increase of 155,000 gross tons is shown for the quarter ending March 31, in contrast with the quarter ended De- cember 31 last, says Lloyd's Register. In this period Great Britain and Ire- Jand made an increase in work under way of 54,000 gross tons, the United States of 43,000 tons, and the other countries combined of 56,000 tons. A comparison of conditions in the last two quarters is shown by Lloyd's Register in the following table of gross tonnage: Mazen reat BAitain and Ireland 1814983 1437196 3,265,920 FOREIGN EXCHANGES.
