— 8 *kk SCIENCE PRODUCES PREELES NETAL Uranium, Worth $400 a Pound, Is Developed by New Electrical Method. BY HOWARD W. BLAKESLEE, Associated Press Science Editor. ATLANTA, April 9.—The age of ma- chines and metals has a new scientific toy—metallic uranium at $400 a pound. It was announced to the American Chemical Society today in the discovery of a new method to produce this hither- to priceless, steel-gray metal, one of the 92 elements of earth and the heaviest in atomic weight. The discovery brings the metallic form within reach of experimenting to increase its uses, new confined mostly to measuring ultra-violet light and to X-ray work. Heretofore it has been made in small quantities in laboratory “bembs.” The new method is electrical, and was reported by Dr. F. H. Driggs, research chemist of the Westinghouse Lamp Co. He said the major part of the expense is in preparation of the green salts from which the metal is obtained. The first stage produces a gray powder, which is poured into molds aad pressed into a metallic substance somewhat resembling tungsten. 4 ‘The metal is virtually explosive in this stage. Dr. Driggs said if left exposed to the air for a few seconds it burns like flashlight powder. except at a somewhat slower rate. It is reduced to true metal in a vacuum furnace in which the fus- ing heat.is produced by electrical in- duction, Rudy's Sax Is Stolen.
