Mr. Davis' statement discloses for the first time that a merger of these two units of the original Standard Oil Co. had been definitely branded illegal by the Department of Justice and throws an interesting sidelight uj the recent agreement to merge two other units of the original Standard, the Standard Ofl CO of New York and qhz Vacuum Oil ‘The heads of Sl.lmhrd of New York and Vacuum announced with disclosure of the merger agreement that the De- partment of Justice had declined to advise them as to whether the com- bination was legal.
