A—16 FIVE U, S. SAILORS BEATEN IN MANILA Attacked by Crowd of Filipino | Civilians After Base Ball Game. By the Associated Press. March 17.—Five American sailors were nursing injuries today, the result of & riot with a crowd of Filipino civillans at Kittelle Field here follow- ing a base ball game yesterday. Timely intervention of B. K. West, an American police captain, who heard the disturbance and ran armed from his home, subduing the rioters until police and ¥he naval shore patrol ar- | rived, was generally credited with sav- ing the five from being beaten to death or_severely injured. E. O. Mecklinburg, chief machinist mate of the U. S. S. Parrott, who re- ceived four fractured ribs and bruises. Three Filipinos were arrested. Police described the riot as a “brawl” and “of no importance” and an effort, was made to suppress the facts. No news was given to newspapers. Re- sponsibility for the fight was not clear. ‘Two other American sailors, G. Cun- ningham and P. C. Battese, from the oiler U. S. S.
