PRIGES EXTENDED Semi-Speculative Industrials, Junior Rails and Foreign Groups Active. BY F. H. RICHARDSON, Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 17.—With vol- ume only slightly less than the record days of Friday and Saturday of last week, the bond market today continued its march into new high ground. There was no quotable difference in time money—the rate still standing at 4 to 4% per cent for 90-day accommoda- tions—but it was in plentiful supply and a further easing was indicated. High-grade issues, now at their high- est prices of the year and some of them at their best levels since 1928, were neglected today in favor of semi- speculative industrials, junior railroad bonds and foreign dollar credits. New offerings totaled $22,765,000, the largest item being $15,000,000 Wabash Railway Co. 5 per cent due in 1980. The issue was priced at 1001, and is call- able at 105, only as a whole, after April 1, 1940, until April 1, 1975, and there- after at par plus a premium of 4 of 1 per cent for each six-month period be- tween the call date and maturity. The books were closed shortly after opening and the bonds were traded at Municipal bonds continued to marked up, most of today's new 5- | municipals being offered at par or bet; tter. Active buying of the second grade “* railroad types forced some of them to new highs, including St. Paul adjust- ments, Denver & Rio Grande 5s, Mis- souri-Kansas-Texas 4'5s, Frisco 4ls, “ | Southern Railway General 4s, Atlantic Gulf & West Indies 5s and Boston & Maine 5s. There were also ad- vances in Chicago & Eastern Illinois 5s, Chicago & Great Western 4s, Erie refunding 5s, Missouri-Pacific 5155, Seaboard Afr Line 6s, Wabash 414s and Western Maryland 4s. Among industrials, new highs were made by American Natural Gas 6'4s, Fisk 8s, Pathe 7s, International Mer- cantile Marine 65, Hudson Coal 5, Dodge 6s, Armour of Delaware 5, Goodyear 5s and U. S. PARTON. Special Dispatch to The Star. DETROIT, March 17.—Two years ago Maynard Keynes, British economist and author of “The Economic Consequences of the Peace,” predicted in the London Nation~and Atheneum that the Ameri- can bull market would last until just about six months after Henry Ford got into full production. ‘The astonishing fulfillment of prophecy was an additional detail of a convincing body of evidence tending to prove that automobile manufacturing and distributing is the key process of American business. An instrument board indicator which would record manufac- tures, employment and sales also would be a barometer of business conditions. 107% 107 . 1023 102% 102% No Am Ed6%s63. 48 1031 102% 102% 1 101% 100% 101% * 5 102 102% 102%% 17 100% 100 Upturn Is Shown. Today, in Detroit, automobile capital of America, figures are available which show, on their face, an upturn in the automobile industry. For the week end- ing December 7, 1929, after the market smash, there were employed 172,079. Thus the last week of production shows an increase of 24,397, or 14.2 per cent in the number of persons employed. As to what extent this increase is off- set by part-time employment, or other information is meager and conflicting. Neither State nor Fed- eral bureau or the manufacturers them- selves will go beyond the figures as they ind. While this bit of statistical nourish- ment may be taken at its face value. Detroit is now the testing laboratory for new plans of organization, opera- n and distribution far 'ntal than the readjust- 1f these changes work . the automobile will pace the in- dusl{ill par%de T’lth Ahml:'e ev:: tem; no longer forging ahead or dropping behind its business cohorts. The wheels of the factories are to be meshed more closely in the rack and pinion of eco- nomic safety and stability. Some of these adjustments are fun- damental and some are palliative. With ample credit reserves to tide it over a period of depression, the automo- bile industry is moving ahead con- fidently, but naturally is concentrating on immediate necessities and possibili- ties. Among these is the propose: expenditure of about $15,000,000 during 1930 to junk 400.000 used cars. automobile is the key to national busi- ness, the used car trade is the key to prosperity in the automobile industry.
