HARRIS’ SERMON TEXT. 5 - | several Famous Churches of the Worl Worcester Cathedral, England. THE present cathedral at Worcester is an outgrowth and enlargement of other structures that have graced its site during the past thousand years or more. There was a church of considerable size here for several hun- dred years at least preceding the time of St. Wulfston, who in the year 1084, made enlargements to the old Saxon edifice and dedicated it with the crypt to St. Oswald. Like many of the ancient English churches it suffered sadly from fire and war and storm: and a severe hurricane in 1202 necessitated such extensive repairs that much of the building was practically rebuilt, thanks to the generosity of King John, who contributed 300 marks for the work. Shortly after the reconstruction the bodies of St. Oswald and St. Wulfston, burifed within the church, gained wide | fame as having miraculous properties | and the many thousands who came here for relief from various allments forced ‘William of Blois to cause additional en- largements. It was he who this time enlarged the eastern limb and added the Norman chair. The majestic tower, in the exact center of the church, was completed in 1374, In 1873 a peal of 12 bells each en- graved with the name of an apostle, was added, the largest of which weighs snon pounds; in the following year a g]eu renovation was finished, a set imes added, and the noble struc- “Mistaken Magnitudes” Theme at Foundry M.
