NEW YORK, February 12.—Heeled over against the pier with her stern resting in the mud and with fire still | burning in her hull, the crack North German Lloyd liner Muenchen today a heat-blistered hulk in the Hud- son River. The fire cost two lives and caused $3,000,000 damage. Feeding upon the highly inflammable | cargo of nitrate of potash, shellac and peat_moss, the flames yesterday defied | fire fighters. Officials said th: fire un- | doubtedly was caused by spontaneous | combustion. | All but 80 of the Muenchen's 267 pas- sengers had left the ship when steve- dores discovered the fire. FRXOORNNNA Canaries in Hold Of Flaming Vessel Are Rescued Alive By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, February 12— Far down in No. 4 hold, flames to the right and left of them, a majority of 7.000 canaries lived through the fire that swept the North German Lloyd liner Muen- chen. When_ firemen penetrated the hold today, expecting to find all the birds dead, they were greeted by cheerful chirps. Water had seeped into the compartment, but there was no indication that the flames or smoke had reached the feathered passengers. The crates containing the birds were quickly removed to the dock and bird sced and water supplied. ************ We Can Supply Everything to Enclose Your Back Porch We have all the necessary materials, “including W indow Tames, | windows, & Celotex.
