Skirmish. By the Associated Press. EL PASO, Tex, February 12.—Au- thorities emitted a sleepy “ho-hum” today as they apathetically began an investigation of a border gun battle | yesterday which sent bullets of Mexican rum runners zipping along downtown thoroughfares and into houses and a hotel on the American side of the river. Stray bullets from river bank battles between border patrolmen and rum runners have become so commonplace to downtown pedestrians in recent months that they occasion only casual | comment. Marksmanship of the rum- mers is notoriously poor. One prisoner was captured by the border patrolmen in the batile yester- day, although there, were no casualties. | e outburst of “firing began when snipers on the Mexican side of the al- most dry Rio Grande saw the capture effected. The marksmen attempted to rout the patrolmen by a heavy barrage of rifle fire. Carl Thomas of Chicago was routed from his hotel room by a bullet which shattered the window. ~ Bullets also en- tered the home of Mrs. Elenea Caseras, alone with her baby, but neither was | injured. Border patrol authorities said they ex- pected to learn little from the man held, as the river rum runners ordi- narily are small-scale operators. “BOOTCH” LIKES FIRE, BUT LEARNS HIS LESSON Blaze Started by Child Causes $50 Damage Before Family Gets There. “Bootch,” 4-year-old son of a Chip- pewa Indian chief, won't play with fire any more. No, sir. Things were kind o' dull yesterday afternoon for “Bootch” as he played on a bed on his sister's apartment, at 468 Louisiana avenue, so he decided to start something. The window was open, the air was indeed chilly, a box of matches was at hand, so the most logical thing to do ‘bl:uld be to start a fire, thought the Y. AMUSEMENTS POLI'S—"King Lear.” A triumph in his second appearance in Shakespearean repertory at Poli's is s~cred by Fritz Leiber as King Lear in the English bard's im 1 tragedy. Leiber last night gave a brilliant por- trayal of the ancient monarch, who, in | se-king respite from the cares of state, falls & vietim to the wiles of scheming daughters. His performance was dis- tinctive in this role, held by many Shakespearean students to be the best of the wonderful Elizabsthan play- wright. Leiber's characterization is good throughout, and the final scene especially, when Lear suffers his tragic end following the return of reason after | & spell of madness, he was the actor superb, ‘The company, sponsored by the Chi- cago Civic Shakespearean Society, in- cludes much capable talent and the | play was well cast. All the wit and wickedness of the plotting Edmund were admirably brought out by Hart Jenks. As Kent, the king's faithful and loving | henchman, a difficult part, Lawrence . Cecll was excellent. Exceptionally com- mendable, too, -was the work of John Forrest as the fool. | Lear’s three daughters were played by Vera Allen, Virginia Bronson and Marie | Carroll, the first two assuming the roles | of the schemers, Goneril and Regan, | and the last named that of the banished Cordelia. In the sharply contrasting rts they left nothing to be desired in he way of good reading of lines and subdued performance. ‘The third of the series to be presented tonight will be “Othello.” | | | | { || richer in Vitamins A and D than an One good thing about bein’ well—the Lord is allus sure to take all the good, useful citizens before he gits around to you.
