WATSONVILLE, Calif,, January 24.— Racial hatred, inflamed by the employ- ment of white dancing girls in a Filipino club here, seethed again in the Santa Clara Valley ‘today as the | rosult of two clashes at San Jose, in which one white man was stabbed and | four Filipinos badly beaten. | The outbreak at San Jose, which occurred last night, came while armed Patrols were guarding streets and high- | , Ways here to prevent any possible recur- Tence of the fighting which has raged intermittently for five days, resulting in the death of one Filipino, the flog- &Ing of several others, and the arrest of seven white men on rioting charges. Stabbed in Back. Altred Johnson, 22, was stabbed twice in the back and critically wounded while he allegedly was watching a clash between Filipinos and whites at San Jose. There were two fights, two Fili- pinos having been beaten in each. Police said white men were the aggres- sors in each case. Discovery of an alleged rlllplno‘ mphlet called “The Torch,” to ‘which | vas _attributed the statement that | “Filipinos have as much right to American girls as Americans,” was re- ported to peace officers. The body of Fermin Tehera, 23, a Filipino, was found in a .bunk: house veast of here yesterday. He had been shot through ghe heart. Anthorities said shots were fired into the building by a mob of white men Wednesday night and that several Filipinos fled from the place in terror. Amusement Places ‘Closed. Pool halls and similar places of amusement here were closed at 6 o’clock last night by order of city officials. Members of the American Legion joined | peace officers in preserving order. A few days ago the Northern Monterey Chamber of Commerce adopted a resolution protesting against employment of Filipinos and calling upon State and Federal authorities to deport them. Charges that Filipino jworkers have deprived white men of Jjobs in the fields were sald to have contributed to the ill feeling. Of the seven whites charged with rioting, only one, Fred Majors, Te- Jeased. He furnished a $2,000 bond. The other six, P.
