Y TUURNAMENT‘ (OFFERS VARlEIY1 Comedy, War-Time Psychol- | ogy and Tragic Drama on Guild Program. ‘Three plays were presented last night at the Eastern High School as the sec- ond offering of the Drama Guild's one- -u&nmmmt. One of these w;} one a the. war and the & powerful drama of & criminal about to be executed. Alan Monkhouse's “Night Watches,” & study of dream psychology, was the first P"l:y on the well rounded tense dr-.ml of the war, in which an orderly spends a hectic evening with twa shell-shocked hospital charges. The play presented a little known side of the lmt struggle. “The Valiant,” written by Hall and Middlemass and played by the Takoma Players, brought tears to many in the udience. This study of a doomed man who faces his sister just before the final curtain is about to be drawn down on his life, flnx through the scene pre- tending to be another man, is one of those hardly plausible themes that nevertheless guarantees strong emo- tional appeal. This play won the competition two years ago. The Onnla and Blue Players offered as their contribution a comedy by Loulse Armstrong entitled “The Mouse.” ‘There were plenty of laughs to be had from such situations as the pirate cap~ 'll.. jumping onto a table at the cry of A jmouse—a mouse!” and a small girl ng off with the gold under cover o( clever ruse. tournament will be continued to- a l' night at the Wilson Normal jool. [ wusic | WELDON CARTER'S RECITAL. Weldon Carter, until last night, was kngwn chiefly in Washington as head of the piano department of the Washing- ton: College of Music. Today, however, he is a gifted artist, who presented a racital of fine music before a large au- dience at Masonic Auditorium last n'tht in & way that won respect and genuine appreciation. The well chosen, well done program was well received. Mr. Carter showed, as a dominant quality, a profound knowledge of the texture and interpretative values of the wnpunbnl which he played. He gave Haydn’s “Variations in B Flat Major” in true classic style, with the delicacy for correct reading. Brahms' “Intermezzo in C Major” was given un- usual placement between Haydn and Bagh. Inmeiuhthemluewuw- t!cnhrly well played, wit roper tempo Ild throughout and clever interplay of tne_ different fugue voices.
