Special Dispatch to The Sta NEW YORK, January 17.—After a higher opening, bond prices sagged to- day in quiet trading. The early rise, attributed to overnight orders mostly for foreign account, lasted barely an hour. Then the stock market weakened and convertibles dropped with it. Mort- gage bonds were irregular after the re- action. ‘Today the Stock Exchange put in force the upward revision of commis- sions on bond sales. It calls for $2.50 on each $1,000 par value bond on a non-member transaction; $1.25 for member clearances, and 75 cents for member give-ups. To the increase was blamed some of the dropping off in volume after the fairly heavy total dur- ing the first hour. The selling had its most uniform effect in the prime list, influencing Baltimore & Ohio first 4s, Canadian National 5s, Canadian Pacific 4s, St. Louls-San Francisco “A” 4s, Union Pa- cific first 4s, Great Northern 7s, Phila- delphia Co. 5s, Utilities Power & Light i‘;s and New York Telephone General s. Few issues made any headway against the general trend. Pennsylvania gen- eral 4155, Duquesne Light 414s, Colum- bia Gas 5s and the new 5 per cent issue of the American Telephone & Tele- graph Co, made slight gains. United States Government bonds were quiet; Liberty fourth 4'4s were strong. Convertibles, . especially those of the American and international telephone companies, returned to activity at lower prices. International - Telephone 4148 dropped nearly 4 points. INBETTER DEMAND Dealers Protect Fruits and Vegetables Against Advent of Freezing Weather. several degrees below freezing, com- mission merchants and dealers on the farmers’ line this morning found it necessary to resort to protective meas- ures to insure against losses. Frults and vegetables were the com- modities in need of protection, haulers saying their supplies of eggs would stand much more severe weather before freez- ing Dealers at Municipal Fish Market and in scatteréd wholesale houses hand- ling marine products, as well as meat dealers, weicomed the change in weather, according to their statéments, although the freezing of fish made them appear less attractive. Fish and .Egg Demand. Marine products and eggs were both in fairly good demand this morning, dealers having ample supplies of bo commodities’ to more than demands at prices which prevailed yes— terday. “One result of the colder weather,” observed a dealer, “is an increased de- mand for oysters, cold weather invari- ably increasing the demand.” Shucked stock, received from points on the Chesapeake Bay, Potomac River and tributaries, some of .the more at- tractive supplies coming from Solomons Island, met a good:. aemand. Selects) sold at $2.50, standards bringing $2.30 a gallon. Dealers reported receipt of some fine quality shell stock from various peints. Many of them were from the lower Potomac and the vicinity of Norfolk, others having come from .shippers along l:the east coast of Maryland and Virginia. ' There were plentiful supplies of both fresh and frozen fish. to offer the’retail trade. Receipts of fish from the netters operating in creeks along the Potomac below Alexandria were smaller than early in the week, the demand for them also being small. Crabmeat, in fair demand for salads and deviling, was not so plentiful, but dealers had plentiful ‘supplies of both green and cocked shrimp to offer at 30 and 60 cents & pound. No changes in butter, eggs and meats were reported this morning, the cold ‘weather probably serving -to .continue eggs at prices quoted yesterday. Dealers had anticipated a further decrease in prlm but hardly expect such decrease terialize unti warmer weather relurns Commission merchants continued with plentiful supplies of frufts and vegeta- bles, which were offered at prices quoted the past few days, greens, as spinach and kale are termed. being'in demand. Apples continue plentiful and cheap, dealers reported this morning, increased quantities of fancy 'box',stock . having been received from Yakima, Wash., yes- terday. Shenandoah Valley, Va., growers continued to send large shipments of the fruit to local dealers, the cheapest being offered around $1.25 a bushel. It was reported by déalers in all commodities that prices this morning were substantially the same as prices quoted yesterday. - Today's Wholesale erkfl—-lebben‘ Prices Slightly Higher.
