DOUBT ‘CONFESSION’ IN GANG MASSACRE Chicago Investigator Says Suspect “Doesn’t Know What He's Talking About.” By the Associated Pres CHARLESTON, W. Va., January 14. ~—Belief that a suspect ‘held_here in sonnection with the Valentine day gang- ster killings in Chicago did not “know what he is talking about,” was ex- pressed last night by John Egan, Chi- cago detective chief, after he had ques- tioned the man for two hours. Egan said the questioning developed numerous discrepancies between the story of the suspect and the facts of the slayings of the seven gangsters that are now in possession of authorities. One of them, the detective stated, was that the suspect said cne machine gun was used in the killing, while authorities knew more than one was involved. His description of buildings and other de- tails aiso varied from the facts, the de- tective said. Egan said he would not take the man to Chicago on the basis of what had already transpired, but it was plarined to resume the questioning later. The identity of the suspect has not been divulged by local authorities. The detective chief arrived here late }':!urdly l!ternmn in response to a legram from Dale G. Casto, investiga- or for the Kanawha County prosecutor's qmu saying that the man in jail would “furnish a signed confession and deliver to you the perpetrators of the Valen- tine day massacre. OPPOSITION ARISES TO PAROLE FOR COOK Kansas City Better Business Bu- reau to Fight Prisoner's Release. By the Associated Press, KANSAS CITY, January 14.—The Dlmle application of Dr. Frederick A. k, to be heard by the parole board now in session at Federal Penitentiary at Leavenworth, Kans, will be opposed by the Better Business Bureau of Kan- sas City, George M. Husser, manager, announced yesterday. Husser sald the bureau here had co- operated with other bureaus in 1923 in procuring evidence to convict thel explorer and his associates in an al- ledged scheme for using the mails to defraud. “The bureau believes that to set Dr. Cook free now after he has served less than five years of a 14-year-and-9- month sentence imposed at Fort Worth, ‘Tex., would “nullify the victory won by st..-dw and Pederal authorities,” Husser sal “We do not desire to keep any man in prison except to protect the public. It does not seem to us that five yea is sufficient atonement for defrauding the public,” Husser added. HOLD-UP NETS $10,000.
