CLUB SERVICE INCREASED Emergency' Calls 37.6 Per Cent Higher and Member- ship Gain Is 20 Per Cent. ‘The American Automobile Associa-; tion’s volume of service to its Washing- | ton members incrensed at a more rapid | pace than its rolls did during 1929. This was indicated in figures made ' public today by George E. Kerfeipp, manager of the local A. A. A. club, which showed that while the member- ship here increased ncarly 20 per cent during the past year, the number nr: emergency service calls was 37.6 per cent higher than the preceding year. In other words. the A. A. A. member- ship in’the District of Columbia as 1929 | ended was 25,865, or 4,000 greater than last year, and the number of road calls made in 1929 totaled 66.002, as com- | pered with 48,000 in 1928. Fourth of Motorists Join. Analyzing the year's figures, Mr. Keneipn peinted out that one-fourth of | the National Cap'tal's motorists are A.| A. A. members, and that_each one re- | gency calls during the year. While this| sorvieing was conducted on Washing- ton’s strce s, an almost equal numberl of persons visited the A. A. A. head-| quarters for information on touring: and kindred subjects. A total of 126,946 | maps, tour books, camp directories and | hotel lists were distributed. The association’s legal department advised 2,880 members, collected $17,- 164.62 on 1,554 claims. settled 38 per- sonel injury claims for members, and | paid more than $10,000 to members in personal injury insurance. The asso- | clation removed glass from streets on 225 occasions and cleared away 789 wrecked cars for the Police Department. ‘The schoolboy patrol, which is spon- sored by the association, extended to include units at 166 public, private and parochial schools, as compared with 111 last year, and increased the patrol ‘membership from 1,500 to 2,000. In all, 14,900 safety posters and 30.225 safety lessons were placed in the schools. 10,211 Brake Adjustments. ‘The association adjusted the brakes on the cars of 10211 members, as against 5283 the previous year. and tested and adjusted headlights on 2,221 members’ cars, as compared with 1,263 in 1928. In its efforts to co-operate with Dis- trict authorities in eliminating the hit- and-run evil here, the association’s re- port showed that it paid seven awards of $100 to persons responsible for the arrest and conviction of the drivers in- volved in such cases where serious in- Jjury or death resulted. ‘The year witnessed the establishment of four new services by the A. A. A. ‘These were free ambulance service, do- mestie st ip service, circulating travel library and an air travel bureau. The local club also enabled 124 out-of- town motoring parties to tour the Capi- tal in their own cars with competent guides. Pifty-two weekly tour talks were given over radio station WMAL by the asso- ciation, which also supplud 583 travel books to A. A. A. members. ED!
