FIREMAN RESCUES GIRL AND BROTHER Child of 6 and Youth of 20 Saved in Burning Home. Pireman William E. Thomas of No.! 9 Engine Company executed a rescue rly yesterday morning when he unged into & burning house at 814 rry place and saved a 6-year-old | rl and & 20-year-old youth from the es. The children were lef; in the | ring structure when their parents | ped to safety from second-story indows. The family of four colored persons re asleep In their home when the i broke out. The alarm was tumedi by an unidentified man. Firemen reached the scene to find James Grady and Mrs. Hattle Grady, the parents, struggling frantically to open second- story windows. They jumped before the ‘firefighters were able to spread & net. Hearing the cries of the boy, David Grady, Fireman Thomas rushed through a flame-enveloped stirway to reach them just as the youth was ren- dered unconscious by the smoke. He snatched the little girl, Mary, from her brother's arms and made vay out- side. Another trip saved David. ‘The mother suffered a fractured leg, | while James Grady escaped with a sprained ankle. Mary and David Grady are reported to be suffering from slight burns and shock. They were taken to Preedmen’s Hospital. LOUIS, January 6 (#).—Use of the name of the Knights of Columbus in connection with a horse race lottery in Montreal, Canada, was condemned by the supreme board of directors of the organization at a meeting here yesterday, The board also awarded the 1930 national convention to be held August 18 to 20 to Boston and the next quarterly session of the board, April 4 to_6, to Washington. Martin H. Carmody of Grand Rapids, Mich,, supreme knight, said he would ask the co-operation of Canadian authorities in suppressing the lottery and its literature. Carmody also said he would seek to compel the promoter 1o return money already collected.
