A new sleeping record was established | today by Samuel Basman, 60 years old, who slept soundly on when a tire vul- canizer exploded with a resounding| boom like a cannon in the room next to him on the second floor of a tire vulcanizing shop at 401 Massachusetts avenue, Mr. Basman's slumbers were undis- turbed in spite of the explosion shatter- ing the glass out of the windows in the | room in which he was sleeping and sending glass in the windows from the | room next to him some 50 yards away from the building, both on the Fourth street and Massachusetts avenue sides. The concussion also tore the plastering from the ceiling and wall in the room in which the explosion occurred, causing 8 damage estimated at about $500 by Walter Basman, 74 years old, who con- ducts the establishment. The sleeping man blinked as he was awakened and informed what had happened. The elder Mr. Basman and Henry Jinson, 50 years old, who were on the first floor of the building, were the only others inside when the explosion occurred. A crowd of several hundred persons gathered rapidly around the structure after they had been attracted some dis- tance by the explosion, reported to have | sounded like a cannon firing. The Fire | Rescue Squad and No. 6 Engine Com- pany were summoned to the scene, fire resulted from the blast. Mark Guy Pearse Dies.
