SIMPLE FUNERAL HELDFORC. P. TAFT Cincinnati Honors Philan- _ihropist, Newspaper Publish- er and Business Leader. By the Associated Press. CINCINNATI, January 2.—The sim- | gnmy that ruled the life of Charles | ‘Taft, philanthropist, newspaper pub- lisher, patron of the fine arts, politi- -clan and business man, who died Tues- day night at the age of 86, was re- tained in death as his body was laid to rest today. Although city and county officials planned to attend the services at Christ Church in a body, and many organi- zations of which he was a member des- ignated honorary palibearers, only the customary rites of the Episcopal Church were arranged, in keeping with Cin- cinnati’s memory of Mr. Taft as a kindly and, until a few years ago, fa- miliar figure on the streets. Symphony Orchestra Pays Tribute. A selection by the Hedermann String Quartet of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, one of the many beneficiaries of the millions given away by Mr. Taft, was the single addition to the regular zpiscapnuun services conducted by the Frank H. Nelson, rector of Christ Churrh and friend of the philanthropist for many years. Like the Taft home, just a few blocks away, Christ Church stands in the old financial district, amid factories, stores and apartment houses. Mr. Taft was one of the city's few wealthy men who Tefused to move from the district when its mansions were swallowed up by business firms. Private Service at Home. Private services at the home pre- ceded the public rites at the church, after which the funeral procession pro- ceeded to Spring Grove Cemetery, where burial ceremonies were private. Chief Justice William Howard Taft, half brother of Charles, and his wife arrived from Washington this morning to _attend the services. Tributes were pouring in at the Taft kome today from prominent men over the world, but they were not made pub- lie. Civic leaders announced they would formuate plans for & public memorial. TWO MEN KILLED IN NEW YEAR REVELS Chicago Slayings Ascribed to Quar- rels Arising During Early Morn- ing Street Celebrations. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, Jgnuary 2.—Two men were shot to death in Chicago yesterday before the year 1930 was barely an hour old. Both slayings were attributed to New Year eve celebra 3 William Hevenamm, 35 years old, was shot and fatally wounded at a party :hlch wound up in a quarrel. His slayer led. 5 Pred Leon Roe, 52, a member of the Chicago Real Estate Board, was found shot to death in front of a Kedzie ave- nue address. Police believe revelers were_responsible for his death. John Simonis, 70, collapsed shortly after midnight in the midst of a street celebration in which several hundred rsons took part. His death was at- ibuted to heart disease. A stray bullet sent Morris Kent to the hospital with a wound in the neck. Merrymakers were blamed for this, too. STRANGE ART THEFT BAFFLES POLICE Rare Van Dyck Canvas Cut From Frame During Shipment. By the Assoclated Press. LONDON, January 2.—Police yester- day were puzzled over one of the strang- est of art-theft mysteries yet to come to their attention. M. Bechabache of Brussels shipped & famous Van Dyck painting, “Concert des Anges.” of estimated £30.000 ($150,- 000) value, to Godfrey Phillips, West End art dealer, here. ‘When the packing cass was opened at the latter's gallery the frame of the picture was found intact, but the can- vas, which measured 5 feet 6 inches by 4 feet 3 inches, was completely cut out. ‘The outside of the case appeared erfectly normal, and police said they gad no clue as to how the painting had been extract>d. Sir Anthoony van Dyck was the Flemish painter who became court painter to Charles I of England in the early seventeenth century. He was known particularly for his delineations of what since has come to be known &s a “‘Van D)ck” brard STRIKE MAY BE ENDED. CHICAGO, January 2 (). —Steps look- ing toward settlement of the differences that have threatened a coal drivers'| strike here were taken yesterday. Offi- | cials of the Teamsters' Union and the coal dealers agreed to meet today to| work out a settlement and drivers were instructed by their leaders to go to work tomorrow pending negotiations. ‘The wage agreement between the two groups expired last night and the em- ployers have declined to sign a new one because of reported objection to George | head of the unio: Bark: WASHINGTON'S NEWESTI 500 ROOMS RADIO IN EVERY ROOM MAND BALL COURT - SWIMMING Poot Complimentary fo Guests Heatth Cuus RATES FROM $300 loociul Rates to Permanent cm- $p= .00 ROUND TRIP NEW YORK Sundays, January 5, 19 h Train Direct to th Avenue and 324 Street Lv.
