INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., December 23.— Officials of the Transcontinental Air Transport Lines began an investigation here today in an effort to establish the cause of the crash of one of its tri- motored passenger planes here early last ol night which brought death to one pas- senger and serious injury to two others. D. C. Law, 47, of Philadelphia, Pa., member of the technical staff of Warner Bros., Inc., motion picture producers, was fatally injured. His left leg was crushed, several ribs broken and he sus- tained internal injuries. C. Mahlon Kline, also of Philadelphia, suffered a broken right arm and severe body bruises. The other injured was Miss_Mary Fearnow, secretary to Don- ald Bartlow, assistant manager of the T. A. T. She sustained a sprained back and shock. Meanwhile an official ipvestigation launched by the coroner last night con- tinued today. The plane, flying eastward from St. Louis to Columbus, Ohio, reached Stout Field, Mars Hill airport, shortly after 5 o'clock, flying half an hour behind schedule. Pilot D. W. Burford of Co- lumbus planned to land the ship and remain overnight, since darkness and heavy snowfall made travel dangerous. It is thought that he misjudged the speed of the ship while landing, and that, added to the slick, icy condition of the fleld, caused the plane to coast to the extreme end of the landing area. The ship struck a 5-foot stump, the im- pact ripping through the fuselage. The stump, ramming through the thin metal of the cabin, is thought to have struck Law, first pinning him against one of the iron seats, which were torn from the shaklings. Law, bleeding profusely, was hurled into the lap of Russell, McFarland another pas- senger. With the motors of the giant plane still roaring, the plane came to earth, rebounding and accidentally releasing the flare which led spectators to believe the ship had caught fire. The plane did not overturn, but skidded crazily down the fleld on the base of the cabin, final- ly coming to a stop near a haystack. Law died on the way to a hospital and the two injured were treated. The passengers who were uninjured were B. Luneman, Oakland, C: Farland, Washington; O'Brien, Brooklyn, N. wards, Brooklyn, . J. Passail J.; M. Stearns, Sharon, Conn., d John R. Brown, Pitts- burgh, Pa. " The passengers, most of whom were holiday travelers, resumed their journey by train last night. H. Leighton, Paterson, N. ; J. H.|Re MONDAY. DECEMBER 23, 1929 National Parks’ Bears Send 31 to Hospitals in Year By the Associated Press. There 4s trouble brewing for the bears in the national parks. Col. C. G. Thomson, superin- tendent of Yosemite, has made the following laconic report to Director Albright: “Bears are slightly on the in- crease. They were the source of greatest interest to visitors dur- ing 1829 and of real concern to us, sending 31 persons to the hos- pital for medical attention and being quite destructive.” In addition Secretary Wilbur has been informed by the wives of the men stationed permanently in the parks that while they were bearing up under the depreda- tions of the park pets the time was coming when they would “a hunting go.” BRAZIL OFFICIALS ENTERTAIN FLYERS Transatlantic Airmen Met by Mili- tary Planes on Arriving at Rio Janeiro.
