Stock Brokers’ Views Differ. Market letters from New York brok- erage houses show marked differences of opinion on the outlook for the rest of December and early in 1930. Some are very bearish, predicting no advance until into January or perhaps February. Others are more cheerful. The latest letter from F. B. Keech & Co., of which George A. Garrett, is resident partner, 8 Daniel Will Prophets of gloom are not likely to | get a large following, particularly as they have arrayed against them the President of the United States, the business men of the country-and the banking interests. Fortunately for the| public at large, transactions for the de- cline involve short selling, and, accord- ing to the well known history of Wall Street, the bears are never successful for any length of time, and the creation of a short interest will be found to be & stabilizing influence.” Local Securities Quiet Today. CHICAGO, December 19 (4).—Wheat values underwent a sharp break today, especially toward the last. Selling was based fo a considerable extent on surmises that official figures tomorrow regarding the acreage and condition of United States Winter wheat and rye would show an increase. Storms crip- pling wire service did much to restrict business, and the market evinced little disposition to rally. Wheat closed unsteady at almost the day’s bottom level, 2% to 3!, cents a bushel lower than yesterday's_finish. Corn closed '3 to % to 1!y cents off, oats 1 to 11, cents down and pro- visions varying from 5 to 7 cents de- cline to a rise of 7 cents. High V. Clos: Ta 1085 LB 124 1 128 13 RYE. December March . Very fair butter should be retailing today at about 44 or 45 cents a pound. Butter prices dropped on the basic butter markets, as illustrated by the New York market price, last week from 43! cents for 92 score butter to 39 cents for the same grade. These low prices still pre- vall. Chicago prices were 2 cents or more below the New York prices. Prices yesterday were: 92 score Chicago, 37 cents pound; 92 score New York, 3912 cents pound. Much of the butter sold in the reg- ular grocery and chain stores does not come up in quality and flavor to the 92 score butter on which these prices are quoted. Some of it is what is known as “centralized” 90 score butter, made from good quality sour cream and sell- ing at 2 to 3 cents below the price of 92 score fresh butter. Still other butter sold in large quantities is 89 score but- ter, and sold at 1 cent below the 90 score, All of this is butter, which will every possible test of purity and STI]EK PRIGES SAG IN SELLING MOVE Market Continues to Recede as Bear Interests Re- new Attacks. BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL, Associated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, December 19.—Stock prices continued to hit the toboggan today as selling pressure was renewed against amusement, public utility, merchandising and specialty shares. At least a dozen issues were carried to new low levels for the year, or longer, and a long line of others carried 1 to § points below last night's closing quota- tions. Only a few issues moved against the general downward trend. Acute weakness of International Com- bustion issues, coincident with the an. nouncement of the appointment of a temporary receiver for that company, and another bad break in Fox Films werz believed to be principally respon- sible for the general unsettlement In- ternational Combustion common sank 5'; points to a new low at 5% and the preferred stock broke 8 points to 2115, which contrast with the year's high of 103!, and 121, respectively. Fox dropped 8% points to 26%,, which compares with the years high of 105% Overnight news failed to provide wuch of market interest. The appe: ance of selling pressure against the merchandising issues was baséd on privately circulated rumors that holiday business was not as bright as had been pictured in some quarters. R. H. Macy dropped 5 points, Sears-Roebuck, 4, and Arnold Constable and Gimbel Bros. pre- ferred sank to new low levels for the ear. ) New Jows for the year also were regis- tered by Kolster and Zenith Radios. Fairbanks Morse and Pathe A, while Continental Shares sank to the lowest level since it was listed a week ago. Some of the selling in this group is be- lieved to have been for the purpose of establishing income tax losses. ‘The Bank of England made no change in its discount rate and its | weekly statement, as well as that of the Bank of France, revealed large in- creases in gold holdings. In view of the reactionary price tendency of thn market within the past week, Wail Street generally looks for a decrease i brokers” Joans.” PACKARD DIVIDEND.
