The Huckins business paid as high as 52 per cent in some cases. The Government three months ago | charged Huckins, one-time small-town grocer and cigar store owner, with using the mails to defraud. The case was dismissed when evidence failed to support claims that the Hickins story of a “cigar business” providing the huge returns was untrue. Charge False Pretenses. Yesterday Judge H. C. Ring, in Linn | County Court at Cedar Rapids, home town of George, issued warrants for ar- rest of father and son, charging they had obtained more than $70,000 under false pretenses. The action capped the spectacular | career of the elder Huckins, who twice in the last 20 years went through bankruptcy: once in the little town of Pittsville, Wis, and once in Cedar Rapids when he lost heavily in the stock market. For the last week he had remained secluded in_ his $100,000 home on Fish Lake, refusing to see newspaper men and sending out word that he was seriously ll; but holding conferences with close friends. While Sheriff Schultz in the county seat of Wautoma awaited receipt of a fugitive warrant, Huckins, bundled in blankets, left last night. His attendant had said Hartford was the destination, to hold a conference with E. H. Rippey, & close friend. Rippey sald, “It's all news to me,” and went to bed when Huckins failed to arrive. GEO. W.
