Euangelival HE Cistercian Abbey at Ole Cleeve, in Somersetshire, was founded in 1188 by Willlam de Romare, grandson of the Earl of Lin- coln. Its first monks came from Revesby Abbey, in Lincolnshire, which had been founded by the same noble- man. Not far away was the chapel of Our Lady of Cleeve, which was a favor- ite place of pilgrimage in medieval times. Cleeve Abbey is quite exceptional among the monastic ruins of Great Britain, in that the church has almost disappeared, while the other buildings are in a remarkable state of preserva- tion. The present owner has removed the farm buildings which covered the church site, and has taken every pains to preserve the beautiful ruins from further decay. ‘The gate house is a structure of the time of Richard II, with additions by the last abbot, William Dovell. It con- tains a square-headed window in the perpendicular style, above which are three niches, the central one containing a sculptured crucifix. On the north side of the cloister garth are the remains of the church, and on the west side is a dormitory in early English style, lighted by a row of lancet windows raised on a vaulted substructure. The dormitory communicated with the church by a door and staircase still to be traced. A fine early English doorway opens from the dormitory into the cloister. This is almost the only perfect conventual re- fectory in England out of the many hun- dreds vacated in the sixteenth century which has survived to the present day. ‘The church was originally a structure 161 feet long of the pure Cistercian type. with cylindrical pillars, a low central tower and short transcepts with two square chapels. Its architecture was of the transitional and early English| styles. Portions of the exquisite en- caustic tile pavement still remain, and have been carefully protected by a super-imposed layer of heavy glass. ‘When ve look upon such a monastery | | Reformed REFORMED GRACE 1th and o Sts.
