This will give present stockholders five shares tor every one now held and the stock divi- dend will add two more shares, so that each shareholder will receive seven shares of the new stock. The following directors were re-elect- ed at yesterday's meeting: William P. Ames, William W. Anderson, Alphonse M. Baer, Emory H. Bogley, Agev Bowles, William H. Clarke, Davenporc B. Elgin, James C. Union Trust Declares Extra. At the regular monthly ‘meeting of the board of directors of the Union ‘Trust Co., held late yesterday, an extra Christmas dividend of 3 per cent was declared, payable December 18 to stockholders of record December 16, At the same meeting the regular quarterly dividend of 2 per cent was also declared. This disbursement is payable January 15, 1930, to stockholders of record De- cember 31, according to announcement by Edward J. Stellwagen, the president. ‘The directors of the Continental Trust Co. yesterday declared the regular quar- terly dividend of 1!, per cent, President ‘Wade H. Cooper announced today. The dividend is payable December 31 to shareholders of record December 23. President Rolfe E. Bolling, president of the Merchants Bank & Trust Co., announced today that the directors of the trust company have declared the regular semi-annual dividend of 3 per cent. This dividend is payable on De- ;:ml;elr 31 to stock of record Decem- T 31, The recently declared guarterly divi- dend of $1.62; on Peoples Drug Store referred xmck will be paid on Decem- r 16 and the 25 cent dmdend on the common stock is payable on January 2. Caution Urged in Cashing Checks. Local bankers have been startled to| learn that a good many Christmas Sav- ings Club checks have beem stolen in apartment house mail boxes and that the merchants have been cashing these checks quite freely. The banks are to- day calling attention of the merchants to the fact that these checks are not made out to the bearer, but to a spe- cifically named person. That makes the merchant, rather than the banks, liable for the losses. Local merchants are being warned to be sure that the persons presenting these checks are known li)el's/\)nmly by those cashing them. All the stolen checks have, of course, carried forged signatures when presented for cashing. The more daring crooks have gone still further than this, however, and have forged the entire check by obtaining blanks and filling in the amount as well as some fake name to whom it is to be paid. The Christmas savings checks are made out on special blanks with a picture of Santa Claus on them, so this forgery had to be very carefully planned in advance. ‘Washington bankers suggest that all these checks should be cashed at the banks, except in the numerous cases| ‘where the identification is certain. Columbia Building Directors. Melvin C. Hazen, Thomas P. Bones and L. Perry West, directors in the Co- lumbia Permanent Building Association of the District of Columbia whose terms expire, were re-elected last night at a meeting of stockholders for terms of three years, beginning January 1. Other directors in the association are Floyd E. Davis, Albert H. Taylor, Al- pheus E. Riddle, William P. Richards, Howard R. Norton and Fred A. Smith. Riggs Bank Club Election. ‘The snnual meeting of ‘the Riggs Bank Club, social orgarization of Rigg# National Bank, held yesterday, resulted in the election of the following officers for the new administrative year: George H. Morris, president; Willlam E. Brooks, first vice president; E. E. Fisher, second vice president; Miss Jane Kennedy, sec- retary. George M. Irelan was re-elected treasurer. The executive committee includes Mrs. Elsie W. Boteler, Mrs, Mildred F. Hoeke, Kenneth N. Alvey, Emory G. Shanks and Daniel ‘Wisecarver. Branch representatives are Robert Mellefont. Dupont Circle; Joseph A. Keene, Park Road; Miss Eva Ricker, Farmers & Mechanics and Friendship Heights: Mrs. Myrtle Wolfe, Seventh and I streets; Louls Quintzer, North- west. Lonsdale Lauds Bank Service. President John G. Lonsdale of the American Bankers’ Association, writing in Trust Companies Magazine, asserts: “Let me emphasize the fact that the trust department is one of the most im- portant divisions of a bank; that as such it deserves the hearty encourage- ment and co-operation of the head of the institution; that our fleld grows steadily with the wealth and increased activities of a busy Nation and that we should never rest in this great humani- tarian work until virtually every citizen has made adequate provision through the corporate trustee or executor for the safeguarding of his estate after he has passed beyond this vale of tears and troubles.” Kn;tmln Corporation. NEW_ YORK, December 11 (#).— Martin L. Straus, president of the Hart- man Corporation, declined to comment upon Wall Street reports that the divi- dend would be increased early next year, although such action is regarded as likely in view of the stockholders’ refusal to approve the proposed merger with Montgomery-Ward and the fact that 1929 earnings are expected to aj Ximate $2.50 a share. The current fisldend on the B stock is $1.20 a Bually. % 354% 6% 10 524 42% 23% T8% 157 60% 7618 62 348 FINANCIAL. THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1929, FINANCIAL. STOCKS IRREGULAR “INSHIFTING TREND Market Reflects Uncertainty in Speculative Sentiment. Specialties Gain. BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL, Associated Press Pinancial Editor. NEW YORK, December 11.—The stock market floundered about in & rather erratic manner again toda; Prices headed upward in the early trading under the leadership of the public utilitics and the oils, but turned irregular later when selling pressure was renewed against United States Steel common, General Electric and some of the other recent leaders. Trad- ing, while somewhat larger;in volume than yesterday, continued to be of a highly professional character. Business news was more favorable in tone. The Iron Age review stated that while December will be a poor month, both in shipments anc ‘production, sentiment in the iron and steel industry % | Clearing house statement: has improved and nowhere are there signs of a general paralysis in trade such as developed after other stock market panics. Foreign sales of copper yesterday were remned to be the larg- est in three montl Some disappoint- ment was shown in the sharp falling off in freight car loadings during Thanksgiving week, but this was at- tributed, in part, to the holiday. Spectacular Gain, Philadelphia Co was the spectacular fe-ture in the public utility group, soar- ing 34 points to 224, jumping several points between sales. Standard Gas & Electric was marked up 9%, American Water Works Y, Electric Power & Light 6, Detroit Edlson 5, Federal Light & Traction 41; and Peoples Gas 4', but many of these gains were cut. down in the afternoon selling. Buying of the utilities was based on reports of steadily expanding e&tflcfl output and the be- lief that the increased dividend rate on Public Service of New Jersey was the forer\lnner of other special distributions. ils enjoyed a temporary period of strennh under the leadership of Hous- ton, Mexican Seaboard and Simms Pe. troleum. Dividend Actions. Dividend develapmenu were largely favorable. The annual payments on the common and preferred stocks of the 3, | Westinghouse Electric & Manufactur: Co. were increased from $4 to $5, bu the common sold off sharply on the an- nouncement, presumably because many traders had expected ‘a stock split-up. Otis Elevator scored an extreme gain of 13 points on the announcement of a a—lor-l stock split-up. U. S. Steel common, after touching 182% during the morning, sold off to 178% in the early afternoon. General ectric _dip) 5 points below last night's clou and Westinghouse Electric 2%. International Harvester, Johns Manville and Radio also turned. soft in the early afternoon trading.
