FINANCIAL. EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, MONDAY, DECEMBER ? FINANCIAL. CAPITAL TRACTION REVENUES SHRINK Loss of $69,207 Revealed in Report for First Ten Months of 1929. BY EDWARD C. STONE. ‘Total net income of the Capital Trac- tion Co. in October and for the first 10 months of the pyesent year shows a falling off, according to the report filed today with the Public Utilities Commis- sion. The loss in total net revenues for the month was $17,177.01 and for the longer period amounted to $69,207.15. The chief reason for both declines was a | slump in revenue passenger traffic, due largely to privately-owned automobiles and bus competition. During October there was a decline in passenger trafic amounting to 185,416 fares. while the declinc for the 10 months totals 1,552.237%. In October the Capital Traction suffered a loss of over $7,000 in total operating revenues, but this was largely ?nfitm~ a reduction in erating costs of $6.563. OpCflmpngnsnm betwaen the earnings and expenses in October, 1929, and the corresponding month in 1928 are as| follows: Operating Operating expe Taxes Operat taxes .. Operating_incoine Gross _income. g Deductions {rom gross.. Net me : Revenue passenvers Ten Months' Earnings Summarized. | Earnings for the 10-month period are equally interesting and make it possible to estimate fairly accurately what the total earnings for the year will be. While Capital Traction's operating revenues are smaller, the management has made a reduction of nearly $8.000 in operating costs. Operating expenses and taxes have been larger this year than last. The usual deductions from gross in- come have been reduced this year by the sum of $12,224.69. At the same time the company’s non-operating income is lower this year than last. Comparisons of all the important items in the report for the 10 months of 1929 and the same period in 1928 follow: Operating Tevenues. Operating expenses Operating expenses and R e Operating income. Dame, president, said, “aggregate upwards of $100,000,000 for new work authorized, including new projects and amounts carried over from this year in connection with large con- struction programs falling naturally into two or more calendar years. Of this amount it is estimated that about $57.- 000,000 will be expended during 1930, as compared with $50,000,000 expended during 1929. The figures do not include expenditures for maintenance which will approximate $11,000,000 for 1930. One of the important items provides for an extensive addition to the Benning plant in this city. Chain Store Business Good. The business of chain stores has been virtually unaffected by the recent dras- tic break in the securities market. No type of business is more inherent- ly stable than that of the merchandis- ing chains which sell the necessities of life at low unit cost. There is evidence to indicate that chain store businesses really thrive in times of temporary business depression. These are conclusions set forth by R. W. Lyons, executive secretary of the National Chain Store Association. Local Exchange Active Today. Considerable activity developed on the Washington Stock Exchange today after the four-day lull in business. 1 ‘Washington Gas Light stock sold to the extent of 40 shares at 100. This is the same as a recent sale, but below where the stock has been quoted dur- ing most of the year. Federal-American Co. commcn came out at 33 and 10 shares of the preferred issue changed hands at,par. A small Iot sale in Lanston registered 106. Mergenthaler figured in a 10-share sale at 10412, a fractional new high on the present move. A 25-share turn- over in Peoples Drug Stores preferred was recorded at 102z, the stock now being ex dividend. Capital Traction sold at 75!, for a 10-share lot, up a half from the last sale. Potomac Electric Power 5!2 per cent preferred came out at 1041, and | Washington Railway & Electric pre- ferred sold at 947,. Seventy shares of | National Mortgage & Investment pre- ferred moved at 3%. Bond trading was confined to Wash- ington Gas 6s, series A, at 101!, and 101: Railway & Electric 4s at 82, Wash- ington Gas 5sat 997 and Capital Trac- tion 5s at 9215, The Chestnut Farms Dairy 6% per cent 1941 bonds have been stricken from the list, as they were called for pay- ment today ai 107!5 plus interest. ‘There have been $637,500 of these bonds outstanding. Heard in Financial District. - Members of the local Christmas Sav- ings Clubs reported the arrival today in the ma@ of their checks for what they saved during the past 12 months. These checks totaled over $7.000,000. Next year's clubs have already cpened. Local broker offices were open today after the four days’ vacation. It was a real vacation, too, as the local offices were well caught up with their work Another such long holiday is unlikely for vears. Montgomery Ward November _sales, $29.351,303, increase 17.3 per cent over November, 1928, 11 months $255,731,- 305, increase 17.6 per cent i Stephen I Miller, executive secretary { of the National Credit Men's Associa- tion, says real business, as distinguished from stock speculation, is good and go- ing to be better. The freeing of funds tied up in broker’s loans has brought about a positive improvement in basic credit conditions. Employment is good and money is cheap, he asserts. The National City Bank reports that stocks bought to support the market in the last break have not yet been liqui- dated. The action was not a profit- making move but to allay excitement, restore normal confidence and stop the needless sacrifice of values. Less than half of the pooled funds were used and the bank says the character of the stocks purchased indicates that if there are any losses they will be very slight. ‘The vacancy on the board of directors of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., caused by the resignation of former Gov. Alfred E. Smith, has been filled by the ‘election as a director of Leroy A. Lincoln, first vice president and general counsel of the company. BONUS BOND ISSUES. NEW YORK, December 2 (#).—Sol- diers' bonuses accounted for 1.6 per cent of the bonds issued by states and local governments between 1924 and 1928, says the national industrial conference board. The net total of such issues was $6,930,227,000. TANLEY W. PRENOSIL. Assoclated Press Financiel Editor. NEW YORK, December 2.—The line of least resistance in today's stock mar= ( ket was again downward. Sporadic out- bursts of buying took place in a selected assortment of tobacco, public utility, shares, but these were checked when professional selling ressure was renewed against United ates Steel common and several of che alled pivotal industrials, vely light in volume. S5 news was mixed A series of increased and nd chemice The day = of a further decline tions in the Midwest automobile manu- facturers. The announcement of a large capital expenditure program by the rafiroad and public utility companies for 1930 apparently has failed to stimulaté much of a demand for the stocks of com- panies likely to profit by this increased busines Brokers' Loans. The further decline of $137,000,000 in Federal Reserve brokers' loans last week brought the total down to_the lowest level since November, 1927. Thus eight weel of deflation have more than wiped out the gains of the pre- ceding two years. Credit conditions continue rclatively easy. Call moncy rencwed at 41: per cent, and appeared to be in fairly plentiful supply at that figure. Columbian Carbon was the spectacs !ular individual feature in today’s mar- ket, running up nearly 20 points on what appear-d to be the retreat of an over-crowded short interest. Early in the session, a good demand also devcloped for the Western Mary= land issues, Atlantic Gulf & West Indies, American Tobacco issucs. Sim- mons Co., Alléed Chemical and United States Industrial Alcohol, but the buy- ing petered out when weakness cropped out in other sections of the list. Early Gains Lost. J. I. Case and General Electric can- ¢ celed their early gains of 5'4 and 3 points, respectively, the latter selling down to 212, or 3'. points below last week's close, before it met effective buy- ing suppert. Anaconda Wire & Cable broke 6 points to a new 1929 low at 495%. American Telephone, Detroit Edison, Fox Film, Loews and Union Pacific sold down 4!% to 615 points and Atchison, *Pennsylvania, Electric, Auto Lite and United States Steel common sold down 3 points or more, the last- named touching 159'5. or within 10 points of the low price reached in last month’s break. Weakness of steel, American Can, Westinghouse Electric, Johns-Manville, Du Pont and Anaconda was attributed to a resumption of “bear” attacks by professional operators who have been hammering the market since the begin- ning of last week. Rallying' tendencies developed in the last hour in sympathy with the buoyancy of the chemicals. Hasty short covering erased earlier losses, and the upward trend carried Columbian Carbon 26 points above -the previous close, J. I. Case 9 and United Carbon 8. Eastman Kodak, Otis Elevator, United States Freight, Worthington Pump and A. M. Byers rose 3 to 5 points. Fox Film 81% 81% | recovered 5 points of its earlier loss of 67. Selling broke out again in the final dealings, and the close was ir- regular. Markets at a Glance NEW YORK, December 2 (#).— Stocks irregular; Columbia Carbon ad- vances more than 25 points.
