FOUR ARE INIURED AS BOMB EXPLODES Warning Arrives Too Late to Prevent Blast as. Man Opens Package. By the Associated Press. KNOXVILLE, Tenn.,, November 30. —A bomb mailed from Los Angeles, Calif., by an unidentified person who signed a vain warning, “Dementia,” exploded yesterday and seriously in- jured is recipient, Clark Scott, 26, rail- way mechanic, as he opened it at his boarding house in Townsend, Tenn., near here. Three other persons were injured slightly. Postal inspectors and the telegraph company which transmitted a caution- ing telegram, 25 minutes too late from Los Angeles to Townsend, endeavored vainly to_learn the indenity of the sender. Investigators found a post- marked wrapping stamped as though it was mailed from Los Angeles at 3 a.m. November 25. § Scott, who is a bachelor, and insisted he had no enemies, said he worked in the Southern Pacific Railroad shops at Los Angeles for two years, returning here 18 months ago to work for the Little River Railway Co. He had said the package was mailed from Orlarslo, Fla., but postal inspectors said he un- doubtedly misread the markings. Scott, his left hand torn away, his right hand mangled, both arms cut and burned and his face and eyes seared, was given an even chance to live at the Maryville, Tenn., Hospital. The Townsend postmaster said the package was delivered to Scott at 11:15 a.m. Twenty-five minutes later, the telegraph company manager here said, the Knoxville office relayed to Towns- end this message, addressed to Scott: “Do not open package. It will ex- plode. Throw it in river.” It was signed “Dementia"—medical term for mental derangement. The manager said the message was mailed to the Los Angeles office from some other point, the name of which he had not learned. ‘The package was a double one. Be- neath an aluminum top. secured by screws, was a small square box which f;tp]oded as Scott attempted to open A Mr. and Mrs. Fanchoer and Ada Swann, 8 years old, were standing nearby and were burned. The board- ing house was damaged.
