By the Assoclated Press CHICAGO, November 29.—The pomp and pageantry of nature went on dis- play today =t the opening of the thirtieti annual international live &tock expost tion and hay and grain show at the| Chicago stockyards. | From Europe and Canada have come the purest breeds of domesticated ani- mals, suorting and stomping as they entered the famed old tan bark arena t0 match brawn and beauty with Amer- ica’s finest. In the hay and grain show ate exhibits from the richest soils and best farm lands in the country. As nature’s aides in staging this an- nual pageant are veteran farm experts and eager young boys and girls, whose lives and work largely are dedicated to improving the Nation’s standards in agriculture. COPENHAGEN, November 20. —Two major shipboard operations recently were performed by a young Swedish doctor on the Danish liner United States while the ship was having her stormiest crossing of the season. ‘The_third day out from New York, Dr. Knud Schou was called to the aid of one of the engineers, whose life could be saved only by an operation. With the help of & nurse and two strong men, who held the heavily built engi- neer, he performed one of the most delicate operations known in surgery. Soon afterward a ship’s boy was stricken ~with peritonitis. The next day the storm increased, but the operation upon the boy was completed successfully in an hour and a half. By the Associated Press. - SEATTLE, November 29.—As reports from canneries along the Bristol Bay district of Alaska continued to sift into Seattle, estimates of the damage caused by the terrific gale and tidal wave of November 24 today had reached $200,- 000, indicating the storm was far more serious than at first believed. ‘The only communication with the storm-swept district is through the Sig- nal Corps, U. S. Army, at Dillingham, and the Bureau of Education station at Kanakanek. Dispatches said the storm was the most severs and the tide the highest in years, having come in from the South- West with a 20-foot high.
