WALKER LAUNCHES MAYORALTY DRIVE Speech by “Al” Smith Fea- tured “Red Fire” Rally Last Night. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, October 16.—After a Tammany rally of blaring bands and red fire, Mayor James J. Walker today ‘was formally Jaunched on his campaign for re-election on a platform of past performances with all “mud-slinging” tabooed. At a rally at Tammany Hall at which all the Democratic candidates spoke and were roundly cheered, former. Gov. Alfred E. Smith was given the greatest ovation of them all when he urged re- tention of the Walker administration to fulfill the public improvement program started by it. Topic of Smith’s Address. Smith said the Republican organiza- tion was playing politics to perfect an organization for the 1930 gubernatorial campaign and the 1932 presidential election. He read a letter purporting to have been written by Thomas C. Desmond, treasurer of the Republican mayoralty campaign, soliciting funds.
