AIRPLANE HELL-AD | FOR EXPLORATIONS Lindbergh and Party -Cover 10 Miles of Maya Jungle in Six Minutes. Aviation bids fair to become a great aid to scientists in their intriguing study of ancient civilization, Dr. A. V. Kidder, head of the staff of archeolo- glsts of Carnegie Institution, told re- porters yesterday on his return to Wash- ington from Yucatan. Dr. Kidder was enthusiastic over the discoveries made in a preliminary aerial survey of the Maya region just com- pleted by Col. Charles A. Lindbergh and a party of veteran explorers, He was elated over the discovery of at Igast three and possibly four deserted Wllages hidden in the sun-scorched Jpngles of the tropical country. The scientist revealed he was so pleased with the information gleaned through the use of an airplane that he will recommend that the Carnegie In- stitution purchase a plane of its_own to carry on the task where the fying colonel left off. In case of a shortage of funds, he will suggest that the in- stitution share the expense with other agencies of a similar type. 10 Miles in 6 Minutes. In illustrating the marked adaptabil- ity of planes for exploration work, Dr Kidder cited the fact that 10 miles of the Maya' region never before pene- trated by a white man was covered by plane = few days ago in six minutes. ‘To haye covered this distance through the jungles on foot would have taken at least a day. ‘Three villages never before viewed by explorers were located by -the Lind- bergh party. Dr. Kidder also disclosed that a fourth village sighted from the air may turn out to be one which never had been found “before by scientists. He explained that these ruins are lo- cated in the general vicinity of a vil- lage previously reported to exist by an English archeologist. Col. Lindbergh amazed Dr. Kidder by his ability to_be certain of his where- abouts at all times during lengthy | flights over the jungles. “The way he kept from becoming lost was uncanny,” Dr. Kidder declared. “I am most fa- miliar with much of the country we flew over. So was Dr. Ricketson. Nev- ertheless, we would have been lost any number of times had it not been for Col. Lindbergh. I suppose that's why 'he reached Paris so easily.” Bride Takes Pictures. Mrs. Lindbergh was complimented by | Dr. Kidder for the excellent photo- graphs she took of the ruins discovered | by the intrepid explorers. Asked if Lindbergh’s bride was popular with the other members of the party, Dr. Kid- der replied: “I should say so. She fed us, you know."” A summary -of the scientific results obtained, prepared by Dr. Kidder and Dr. Oliver G. Ricketson, jr. another member of the Carnegie staff, follows: “During the five days devoted to merial exploration, approximately 1.600 | miles of Maya country was covered. The entire length of the Yucatan Peninsula was crossed lengthwise three times in parallel courses. “The first of these courses lav be- tween Lake Peten in Northern Guate- mala and Merida in the extreme north of Yucatan. On this flight the party passed over the institution's excava- tions at Uaxactun and thence tra- versed & hitherto entirely unknown territory in Southern Campeche. where a large ruin was observed for the first time. The night was spent at Merida where the party was entertained by the governor of Yucatan. Return to Belize. “On the following day return was made to Belize over a route farther eastward. On this trip the party passed over the great Maya city of Chh‘htn Itza, where for the past five years Carnegie Institution has been occupled principally with the excava- tion and repair of the Temple of the ‘Warriors. “The third of these courses was de- signed to cover the region inland from the coast between Belize and Coba, a Maya city situated in the extreme northeastern point of the peninsula. It was on this flight that there were discovered two previously unknown Maya ruins, one of which was of con- siderable magnitude. The plane also passed over a very large site which may prove on further investigation to be new. “A fourth major flight covered the area west and south of Belize, in which lie manv of the most important known Mava cities _These_have not_hitherto WILL JAMES C.
