14 SENATOR CARRIES WOUNDS OF BATLE W. E. Brock Still Has Pellet| From “Second Battle” of Missionary Ridge. Bpecial Dispatch to the Star. TTANOOGA, Tenn.. October 12. | - d you believe it if you were told that W. E. Brock, Tennessee's latest senatorial acquisition, was in the battle | of Missionary Ridge? Well, he was and still carries a pellet in the nape of his neck as evidence of this skirmish. The only thing that saved the life of the junior Senator was his keen polit- ical sense, which showed up early in his career. By utilizing this char- acteristic, Mr. Brock analyzed the seri- ousness of the situation with which hew as confronted and thereby made his way from the firing line to safety. The incident which, to a certain extent, decided the destiny of this prominent Chattanoogan, happened on the side of the Mistoric Missionary Ridge, in Chattanooga, Tenn., where a sniper caught him unarmed across the lines. After Civil War Days. You may immediately say this story can't be true, for they didn't have auto- mobiles in the 60s. Nor is the prin- cipal character old enough to have par- ticipated in the famous battle. The | particular battle of Missionary Ridge in which Senator Brock played the leading role was not staged during Civil War | days, but was a good many years later —in 1912 to be exact. At that time the prominent Tennesseean was not a pri- vate in the ranks, but was president | of the Chattanooga Chamber of Com- | merce. The second battle of Missionary ! shots were not fatal Ridge was not fought over slavery and State's rights as was the first, but was | all brought about over a dog, and this | animal was finally called upon to give | his life in an effort to save that of his | owner. Senator Brock was driving up the | ridge abcut dusk one evening in his | first automobile, and riding with him was a friend. Ahead of them in the wooded land they noticed two men walking along with guns on their shoul- | ders, and in front of them a dog. The ‘animal suddenly made for the car, barking with every step. The wheels | of the machine straddled the cur and ! yelps of fright went up. The dog’s master evidently thought his pet had been killed by the strangers, and so, raising his gun to his shoulder | with an aim in the direction of occu- pants of the car, pulled the trigger. Realizing the danger Mr. Brock called to his companion to “duck” and he | in the meantime stepped on the gas. But he was not quick enough to get out of reach of the irate mountaineer's weapon. The second barrel of the man’s gun fired into the car, and then the hunter turned to his companion, grabhed his gun and sgain went into jon. Second Attack Effective. It was during the second attack that Mr. Brock received a pretty good dona- tion of shot in the back of his neck by the mountaineer, who seemed de- termined to ‘even things up with the ldnnn whom he thought had killed his | log. With blood streaming from the wounds, Mr. Brock drove up in front of his Missionary Ridge ‘“quarters,” Jumped out of his car and ran into the house. He was met by his wife and other members of his family who always en- Joyed seeing which' one could kiss daddy™ first. They, of course, noticed immediately that something was wrong. But in. order to prevent any undue larm Mr. Brock told his wife that he FELT AS THOUGH HE DID NOT CARE TO LIVE Was Hardly Able to Work and in Constant Pain. Then —Well, Read His Story. When & man reaches the stage | where he is hardly able to work and finds that each new day means only so many more hours of suffering, is it any wonder that he reaches the stage where he is about ready to give up? f MR. HARRY WILLIAMS, Mr. Williams, well known fireman of the Walter Reed Hospital Fire Department. whose photo appears here, says that was the condition he found himself in. “Yes,” said Mr. Williams, “a few days ago for over a vear my general health had been failing and I could not find any- thing to straighten me out; my stomach was out cof order, food would not digest, bowels did not act regularly and the poison waste sim- ply lay in the stomach to sour and ferment. Gas that formed caused me a great deal of suffering. I was underweight and had lost all the energy and pep I ever had. My legs and arms pained me all the time, back hurt; in short, I was in so much pain and felt so miscrable that I did not care if I lived or not. While in Virginia on a visit some time ago I was fortunate enough to learn of Miller's Herb Extract (for- merly called Herb Juice) and I want to say to every one that here is the medicine that brought me out and was the sole means of restoring me to_health once more. I can truth- fully say that since using this great remedy I feel like a new man and do not have a sign of my former trouble; entire system has been ~leansed and regulated: stomach and bowels in_fine shape and where in the past I was hardly able to do a day's work. I am now able to walk several miles on a stretch and not feel it at all. I also have a sister who uses Miller's Herb Extract (for- merly called Herb Juice) and frank- ly I don't think she would be here today had she not learned of this medicine. I have told numbers of my friends about this remedy and will continue to recommend it wher- ever I go, as I have found it to be | a medicine worthy of the highest price and without an equal.” | Owing to the great demand for Miller's Herb Extract (formerly | called Herb Juice) we have found it | necessary to place another repre- | sentative in Washington. These men who are here to explain_this great medicine are located at Store No. 1, 920 7th Street N.W. and Store No. 9. 31st and M Streets | (Georgetown) of the Peoples Drug Stores. If you are not enjoying good | health stop at one of these stores today and learn how this famous |/ medicine has helped thousands here | in Washingto 8333f§§ft33!8323832333:2;838888888tt‘tz38332tft:282283823Szttt88388883882838&83”88338“88?3”‘”&2&833&““3&“88&38“&33%883888883888882‘8232382{88Sfttt8882388XX883883888883333338388&22 200002022822833883283888 THE SUNDAY STAR., WASHINGTON, D. €, OCTOBER 13, had been scratched by a wire and asked her to get a doctor on the telephone at once. With his surgical knife the Chattanooga physician was successful in removing all but one of the shots, Whlkch still remains in the Senator’s neck. ‘Two or three years after the battle had been fought the man who opened fire was arrested on a charge of shoot- ing with intent to kill. It developed at that time he had later killed his dog and thrown its body in a well to avoid identification. T found he had a wife and two or three children,” said Senator Brock, “and they would be the real ones to suffer if he were brought to trial and convicted. I was also thankful that the and the man admitted he shot in a fit of anger, also that he didn't even know at whom he was shooting. I was, therefore, glad to ask the authorities to dismiss the case. This they did, and the man by whom I was shot and I have been friends ever since.” Concluding his little story Senator id A Day Bed of the better type. One motion and the bed is open. Guadalajara dispatch to El Universal today said the motorman of an electric | car there and two passengers, includ- | ing the cashier of La Experincia cotton | mill, were wounded by bandits who | boarded the car on the outskirts of the city and made off with a pay roll which | was being taken to the mill. | The bandits threw alcohol in the eyes of the cashier, and intimidated three | other pay roll guards.
