ATTRACTIONS IN WASHINGTON THEATERS EARLE—Dolores Costello in “Madonna of Avenue A.” Earle theatergoers are to be treated to @ new character study, the charming Dolores Costello in “Madonna of Avenue A" her latest starring production for ‘Warner Bros., which comes to the Earle ‘Theater next week, beginning with the midnight performance Friday of this week. Miss Costello enacts the part of & girl who has for years attended a fashion- able schools for girls, but who realizes at length that the compelling force of heredity has brought to her various un- conventional traits, a totally unsus- pected heritage from her mother. Hav- ing formed an acquaintance with a sea- man, the unsophisticated girl goes with him one evening to his ship, anchored offshore. When he goes out of the cabin for a few moments the beautiful star is seen in a radiant loveliness that will attract special attention, it is an- | nounced. In the story, however, all the | song has gone from Dolores’ heart be- fore the eyening is aver, Eventually she | finds herself in the hands of Federal | raiders and disgraced. It starts her on an absorbing series of adventures that center around a New York night club. Supporting Miss Costelio in “Madonna of Avenue A" are Grant Withers, Louise Dresser, Otto Hoffman, Douglas Ger- rard and Lee Moran. The picture was directed by Michael Curtiz. Vitaphone presentations and many | short subjects will complete the pro- gram. PALACE—Greta Garbo in “The Single Standard.” Greta Garbo will be pictured at Loew’s Palace, starting Saturday, in the Metro- ‘Goldwyn-Mayer synchronized produc- tion “The Single Standard.” Miss Garbo is supported by Nils Asther, John Mack Brown, Dorothy Sebastian, Lane Chand- Jer and Kathlyn Willlams. The picture was adapted from a story by Adela Rogers St. John. Arden Stuart, an impetuous San Francisco soclety debutante, is weary of the life and circle in which she moves. One night at an art gallery she meets Packy Cannon, ex-Navy heavy-weight champion and also an dealist, artist, sea-roamer and heart- ker. Fascinated with him, Arden goes with him the next morning aboard his yacht. Apparently they are su- gremely contented in their new-found appiness until business sends Packy back to Paris, and he tells Arden she must go back home and forget him.| Arden finds herself a social outcast, when Tommy appears and wants her to marry him, which she does after much persuasion. After three years Packy Teturns and wants her to go away again with him. Then she thinks of her baby, | and tells Packy she must give her life | to her child. Tommy is about to com- | mit suicide, so that Arden may be| happy, but Packy salls away, and all| ends well with a new understanding. On the stage will be Boris Petroft's latest production, “Garden of Love,” featuring Bayes and Speck, vagabond lovers; Renoff and Renove, premier dancers; Felicia Sorel's Daisy Ballet; Miriam Lax, singer, and the Dorothy Berke Girls, while the Palace Synco- tors, as usual, will provide the music. M-0O-M International News, the TFox Movietone News, short subjeots, the Palace Orchestra and Charles Gaige at the organ will complete the bill. FOX—Tom Patricola in “Words and Musie.” ‘The Fox Movietone musical produc- tion, “Words and Music,” is coming to the Fox next week. It has been called & worthy successor to the “Follies.” ‘Tom Patricola, famed dancing come- dian of the long series of George White's “Scandals,” s the featured player, along with Lois Moran, who proved a revelation to many in “The Belle of Somoa,” with Clark and Mc- Cullough, and David Percy, who will be remembered from the recent ‘‘Fox Movietone Follies. ‘The music is by Dave BStamper, American composer, who for 17 years ‘wrote virtually all the music for the revues and musical comedies of a leeding New York producer. The dance ensembles were staged by Edward Royce, who staged the legitimate stage suc- cesses, “Irene,” “Apple Blossoms” and many other: As in the “Follies,” there is & large east of principals in addition to Tom and, of course, & great display of lovel 81 the atage John Irving Pisher will Iaunch his twmci rst week as master of ceremonies, lucing visiting en- tertainers. ‘The Foxettes, 16 strong, will have new dance routines, and Leon Brusiloff will set the rhythm for his Forty Fox Jazzmanians. S METROPOLITAN=Coll ‘Moore in “Smiling (Irish Eyes.” ‘Washington thester patrons will be given their first i rtunity to hear Colleen Moore's Saturday, when her first talki |On the suj dous cost, that represents the highest achievement to date in talking pictures.” Not only does Miss Moore speak in this | First _National-Vitaphone production, but she sings several songs, written especially for the picture. ‘The story of “Smiling Irish Eyes” has the beautiful Irish countryside as a background, almost the entire picture having been photographed in outdoor locations. Miss Moore portrays a little Irish peasant girl, and all her speech is tinged with a soft brogue. James Hall, her leading man, also sings in this pic- ture, which John McCormack produced. | Others in the supporting cast are Claude Gillingwater, Aggie Herring, Robert Ho- mans, Betty Francisco, Robert Emmett O’Connor, Julanne Johnston and Tom O'Brien. COLUMBIA—Ronald Colman in “Bull- | dog Drummond.” Ronald Colman in his first talking hit, “Bulldog Drummond,” remains at Loew's Columbia for a second week. “Bulldog Drummond” is an adaptation from both the book and the well known play of the stage. Joan Bennett, Montagu Love and Lawrence Grant also play impor- tant roles in this United Artists’ pro- duction. Hugh Drummond, a demobilized Brit- ish army officer, is bored with the after-war quiet and humdrum club life. stion of a friend, he in- serts an advertisement in a newspaper, offering his services in any dangerous and thrunfl enterprise. Phyllis Ben- ton takes advantage of his offer, meets him at a roadhouse, and tells him her uncle is being held a prisoner in a sanitarium by a group of underworld characters in an effort to extort money from him. The place is Lakington's Sanitarium, presided over by Dr. Lak- ington, a doctor mentally unbalanced, whose greatest pleasure is in torturing victims. Drummond tralls the party and succeeds in freeing the uncle. The crooks reta’ 'e by capturing the girl. They also succeed in capturing Drum- mond, but after a series of exciting and thrilling episodes he manages to escape with the girl and trap the gang. The picture, however, has a surprising and novel climax, although the usual ro- mance is present. Added attractions include Van and Schenck, America’s foremost vaudeville team, in comedy songs, presented In Metro Movietone acts; the Tiffany color classic In sound, “A Song of Spain”; the M-G-M International News, the Fox Movietone News and the Columbia Orchestra, Gayety to Open. For years the Gayety Theater on Ninth street has been the old burlesque standby. Patrons of this form of amuse- ment, therefore, will be interested in | the announcement that the Gayety will open Saturday night, August 24, to pre- sent a Mutual Burlesque attraction—for the Gayety now is counted among the theaters of the Mutual Burlesque circuit. ‘The theater this year will be under the management of Jimmy Lake, who is reputed to know burlesque from be- ginning to end.
