THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, D. €. MONDAY, JULY 29. 1929. VETERANS FIRST | FOR CENSUS J0BS Wives and Widows Also to| Have Preference, Director Steuart Says. Assurances that veterans, their w and widows will be given first prefe ence in the appointment of enume! etors in the organization that is to take ! the fifteenth census of the United States were given by William M.} Steuart, director of the C: | in a letter to Representative low, Democr 2 c today. ! Steuart in his reply to Mr. v in this act to| < Congress | to give such preference to veterans, whether disabled or not, as well s to their wives and widows. Veterans Sought Priority. ! “Certainly, it s my intention to give | preference to such persons whenever | possible in making the appointments for the coming enumeration,” Director | Steuart, wrote. | The Disl of Columbia department | of the led Veterans of the World War also recently adopted resolutions insisting on briority for veteran: similar action has been taken b eran orzanizations elsewhere. Mr. Lud- | low represents the Indianapolis distric in which is located headquarters of the | American Tegion. | There will be about 100.000 enumer- | ators appointed thronahont the coun- trv. all of whom will bs outside the civil gerviee. Stenart’s Letter, Director Steuart’s letter reads in part as follows: “You know and T believe every mem- | her of Congress knows that at least one snumerator will be required ‘in every political subdivision to collect the sta- tistics of agriculture and enumerate the nopulation and possibly to gather other information required for the ecensus. | These persons will not be required to | take 8 civil service examination. but they will be required to take an exami- nation that I will prescribe for them. This examination will consist of the sanswering of a number of inquiries to enable the office to decide upon their aualifications, and also to prepare a census report for population, agricul- | ture, etc., based upon a narrative fur- nished by the Bureau of the Census for this purpose. The bureau is now actively engaged in organizing the force of supervisors who will be required for the census. This organization should be well ad- vanced by the coming Fall and it is the intention to then take up the selection of enumerators. From vour letter. I un- derstand that you believe that the r aquirements for the census enumerato: ean give the large”t number of appoin ments to veters. their widows, ete, but it must bf distinctly understood that all person$ receiving these ap- pointments mu®t demonstrate their ability to do the work, and that they must not undertake the job unless it is their intention to see it through: also that they will have to have qualifica- tions equal to those of other applicants.” BEACONS AUTHORIZED.
