Weather conditions and absence of thousands of persons from the city for | the heated period are reflected in the local markets, according (o dealers, sales being nothing like as heavy as during the Fall and Winter seasons. Whole- salers naturally take it for granted that demands will not be so heavy during the hot weather, and shippers of food- stuffs, especially varieties that are perishable, are advised to reduce ship ments. Numerous shipments of fruits and vegetables from distant points during | the recent hot weather were received here in such bad condition that dealers refused to accept them. resulting in total losses to shippers, while in other | instances shipments were accepted and | sold at a loss, the sale prices not being enough to more than defray express charges, A number of shipments of corn and | peaches came in bad condition, some | unfit for food, shippers having failed to take the precaution of shipping their products in chilled cars. and it is be- cause of losses incurred in this way that dealers are urging shippers to take every precaution to protect their shipments. “No price on them,” was the com- ment of a dealer one morning this week when asked for a quotation on peaches. “Asking a dollar, “he added, “but will have to take anything offered.” It was explained by the dealer that | the fruit was ungraded and had reached s0 advanced a stage of ripening that | few of tnem were scarcely in condition | for making jam. Prices paid for some | of the fruit were below express charges, | Corn and Peaches. In & number of instances, accord- Ing to reports of dealers, corn received from as nearby as North Carolina came in miserable condition. It was dry and hard enough for feed for cattle, and vet, m dealer stated, the shipper ex- pected well paying returns. Corn received earlier i from as far away as Texas, it is stated, came in much better condition, shippers | there giving it a cold water treatment | when gathered and shipping supplies in | | refrigerating cars. Homegrown corn has come to the rescue, however, but not in quantities 'sufficiently large to sup- | ply demands, and prices are depending | entirely upon the size and condition of the vegetable. | Hot weather has affected receipts of | eggs. according to wholesalers, making candling_losses of current recelpts heavy. It is nothing unusual to find one or two dozen spoiled eggs in a crate of 30 dozen of the product of the hennery. This, of course, does not ap ply stock. Dealers in marine products have ex- | g perienced losses of fish and soft crabs | as a result of weather conditions. the crabs having been particularly affected. It is because of such losses, it is stated. that prices are higher at times than | otherwise would be, es in the meat market are neg. ligible, dealers say, because most of thi receipts are so carefully handled from | the time of slaughtering until turned | over to retailers. Market business has not been par- ticularly brisk this week. It has been about what dealers had reason to ex- pect, however, and they are hoping for an earlier improvement than usual. Re- convening of Congress is expected to bring about increased busine: Wholesalers were out early this morn- ing to get supplies of perishable prod- ucts while the weather was cool, num- erous other supplies having been ob- tained yesterday. Meats, fresh killed—Beef, 2412; veal, 23; lamb, 28a30; pork loins, 34; fresh hams, 30a32; fresh shoulders, 22; smoked hams, 30; smoked shoulders, 22; bacon. 26a28; lard In bulk, 15; in packages, 16. hl.}k,\;e stock—Calves, 15; lambs, 1215 Fruit displays this week have been particularly attractive, dealers saying they were equal to. if not better than, usual displays at this season of the year. Every day this week dealers have re- celved large quantities of choice fruits from far and near, most of it coming from the several sections of this coun- try, however, very few imported fruits coming this late in the season. ‘Watermelons have been more plenti- ful the past two days than earlier in the week, dealers reported, supplies most of the week having been men- tioned as moderate. Georgia growers, leading in shipments of melons, shipped more than 250 carloads of the popular fruit to various sections of the country a single day this week. Alabama, South Carolina, Texas and California were the other shippers of large quantities of the fruit. Increased receipts of melons the past two days weakened the market. There were many Thurmond Grays among the local receipts, most of the others being Tom Watsons. The former melon, 32- pound average, sold around 60 cents. while some of the Tom Watsons, small and ordinary condition, sold as low as 25 cents. Liberal supplies of cantaloupes wer: reported throughout the week, supplies being almost in excess of demands, and some were so small and ripe that re- tailers gladly sold them as low as 60 cents a dozen. California cantaloupes have not been so plentiful this weel the season for early crops gradually drawing to a close. Salt River Valley, Ariz., shippers are sending increased quantities of the fruit here, however, and Georgia and South Carolina are contributing to re- ceipts. Few cantaloupes have been shipped from the Ridgeway section of North Carolina, according to reports. Arkansas and Nevada wers also are shipping small quantities to various sections. [ Fruit From California. California shippers continue to flood the market with large quantities of honeyballs and honeydews, both fruits being in demand at prevailing prices. Tflglnl was slow on the smallest of the honeyballs, 54s selling around $2.50. Jumbos, 45s, sold around $4.50 and $5. Standard crates of honeydews sold at $1.50 and $2. Liberal supplies of peaches have been reported throughout the week, meeting & moderate demand and weakened con- dition of the market. Many of the peaches came unclassified and un- ed, such fruit meeting a slow de- mand. Other fruit, chiefly from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, was both classified and graded and of- fered at prices in advance of that de- ‘manded for common stock. Moderate supplies of apples the past few days met a moderate demand and steady market. The several varieties of early fruit, all attractive, sold around $1.75 and $2 a bushel, few Trans- parents, large size and fine quality, sell- ing as high as $2.50. Bananas continued in demand. Oranges and grapefruit, not so plenti- ful, were in only fair demand. Com- mission merchants also had supplies of alligator pears, plums, apricots, pears and other small fruits to offer the trade during the week, ‘Tomato prices continued surprisingly high the past few days. Offered as low as 50 cents for primes and 25 cents for culls early in the week, priced started upward the middle of the week until some dealers asked as much as $2.50 for 2-peck baskets. Prices yesterday ranged from $1.75 to $2.25. A slightly easler condition of the po- tato market was reported yesterday, prices dropping to around $5 a barrel. Earlier in the week they had brought $5.50 and $6. Sweet potatoes, mostly from Georgla and Tennessee, were of- fered around $1.75 a bushel. Other Vegetables. Lima beans have not been so plenti- ful the past few days. Receipts of squash continued fairly heavy, dealers reported, and carrots, beets and Spring onions have been plentiful and cheap all the week. North Carolina growers have supplied the local market quanti- ties of peppers, among them being some of the Itallan variety. Lettuce has been more plentiful and cheaper this week. Fairly large quan- tities of cucumbers have reached the local market this week, while eggplant has been only fairly plentiful, Local dealers are interested in_the condition of the egg market, prices hav- ing changed but little the past month. It is said receipt of fresh stock from the West has boosted the market to the extent of keeping prices from soaring. Hennery stock continues in demand, consumers displaying a willingness to pay fancy prices for them. Losses on current, reclrta have been heavy, candling disclosing one or two dozen eggs unfil for food. Eggs in storage in the four principal egg centers, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia and Boston, this week totaled approximately 3,500, 000 cases, nothing like as many re: ported in storage this time last year. A satisfactory condition of the poul- market this week was reported by wholesalers. Receipts continued in ex- cess of demands, and prices dropped. Dealers still are offering turkeys to the trade. Most of the turkeys are being consumed by hotels and restaurants for salads and sandwiches, being cheaper than chickens. ‘Municipal Fish Market has been an attractive place to many retailers and consumers this week. NEW YORK, July 20.—Renewed a tivity in International Telephone & Telegraph convertible 4!5s early today | brought this bond up over 3 points from yesterday’s closing and to a level slight- ly higher for the first time on this movement than the American Tele- phene & Telegraph 41.s. list was in American I. G. Chemical 5155, amounting to 6 points. This week these bonds, which were issued at 95, have advanced from 111 to about 127. Alleghany Corporation 5155 were also strong, with Atchison 41s. Soutnern Pacific 4155 and Missouri Pacific 5158 reflecting the buoyancy of the rail stock market. Philadelphia & Reading 6s gained over a point, and Wickwire Spencer 7s were firm. 3 There was arother heavy market in United States Government issues. with the Fourth Liberty 4135 off a point from thelr recent high uf par.
