- CLOUDBURST KILLS T I ONE FAMLY Wall of Water Overturns Car, Sweeping Occupants Into Raging Stream. By the Associated Press. MOSELLE, Mo., July 15.—Mrs. Marie Beckman, 28; her four children, ages 15 months to 7 years, her mother and her brother were drowned in Pinoak Creek, southwest of here, yesterday when a 5-foot wall of water from a cloudburst overturned an automobile and swept them to their deaths. An eighth person was & victim of the storm at De Sota, Mo, 20 miles from here. when he was struck by lightning while playing ball. B Eight Are Dead. The dead: Mrs. Marie Beckman, 28, of Walnut Park, St. Louis County. Mrs. Mary Tigges, 51, mother of Mrs. Beckman. Lawrence Tigges, 15, brother of Mrs. Beckman. Virgil Beckman, 7. @/ for formal wear Marie Beckman, 5, Irene Beckman, 2. Bernice kman, 15 months. Clarence hl, 15, of De Sota. william F. Beckman, husband and father, was the only survivor of the family outing yesterday, and he owed his life to the fact that he had gone for assistance to get the automobile started when the swirling torrent poured down on the hapless group. Car Slid Into Creek. Beckman had parked the car on the edge of the creek. Rain an hour or so before the cloudburst made the bank slippery and the machine slid into the creek. Beckman prevailed on a farmer to tow him out, but with the machine again on the bank Beckman found the 's distributor was wet. He left his family to get aid, only to return to see the machine overtarned and demol- ished. The farmer’s car, likewise, was destroyed by the water. The farmer could not say how he escaped the tor- rent. Coroner Thomas P. Shaffer of Union | organized searching parties and three of the bodies were recovered before dark. They were Irene and Bernice | Beckman and Lawrence Tigges. Sh: fer's parties stretched a net across th mouth of the creek to keep the bodies from being swept into the Meramec River and dragged pools left by the re- | ceding flood, | The cloudburst struck De Soto, ac-| companied by lightning and a high| wind. Stahl was instantly killed by the | bolt as he was seeking shelter. Several in our Once-a-Seas ENTIRE STOCK OF DRESSES ERLE-MAID FROCKS vy Off Formerly 2950 ... LOS ANGELES, July 15.—Asserting that a “secret method” of ‘ education has tended to give 9-year-old Jack Berry a ‘“superego,” Judge W. B. ‘Thompson of the Municipal Court pronounced a suspended sentence of five days in jail on the boy's mother, Mrs. John Berry, who had refused to allow him to attend public schools. Mrs. Berry, who was convicted by a jury for violation of the school at- tendance law, informed the court she would appeal. She was granted a year’s probation on condition she send her son to school. ULY ““Your method of teaching your son,” sald Judge Thompson, has tended to five him & superego. The boy now is 'bo"nfn under a dejusion which will result & rude awakening when he has to leave your side and face the world by himself.” Motion for a new trial was denied. During the trial, the boy demonstrated a startling knowledge of geography, his. tory, theology, astronomy and fore! languages, which his mother sald she had taught him by a secret method. e ‘Twenty thousand tourists visited Ha- wall in 1928, breaking previous record: PASSPORTS ORDERED IN SMUGGLING CASE Chinese Consul at San Franeisco Instructed by Legation to Pre- pare for Suspects’ Return, By the Associated Press. SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., July 15. ‘W. G. Kung, Chinese consul gener: disclosed here last night that he had received instructions from the Chinese legation in Washington to prepare pass- ports for Mr. and Mrs. Ying Kao and Suen Foo, prominent Chinese charged with attempting to smuggle opium into this country. The announcement was taken to mean that the trio would be returned to China and tried under the laws of that countr; The three were arrested last week, | several days after a huge consignment of opium had been found in trunks which Mrs. Kao had brought here from China under a consular frank. Kao was Chinese vice consul here and Foo was chancellor of the San Francisco consulate. Because of the diplomatic connec- tions of Kao and Foo United States officials entertained some doubt as to whether they should be prosecuted here. The three were arrested when admin- istration officials at Washington held that their connection with the con- sulate did not prevent proceedings in the, American courts. Soviet military expenditures in 1927 totaled $42,500,000, according to a re- cent official announcement. I P g Women Barred From Cafes.
