C. ROYLE. | Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 19.—Industry is profiting more than at any time in history from the lesson learned cen- turies ago in Egypt on the futility of making bricks without straw. As a result the machinery and tool manu- facturers of this country today are still ‘working at capacity and still are unable to fill all demand for equipment—which in these days means what straw meant in the Egyptian brick yards. ‘The activity of the machinery and tool plants is cogent evidence of the stability of industrial activity, for em- e are not in the habit of tying b huge sums in tools “for idle hands or in machinery which is likely to be idle for extended periods. It is notable that the accumulation of orders is very high and will require operations of the manufacturers at present rates for| some time to fill them. * *According to the latest announce- ment of tl National Machine Tool Builders' Association, unfilled orders of members of the organization reached a new high record in the last month. Demand is exceptionally well bal- anced. The losses which have been en- countered in orders from those serving agricultural communities and making arming equipment have been counter- b‘hneed b{.an Tequirements of other lines. TAL. STOCKS IRREGULAR N HEAVY SELLING Difficulty in Obtaining Public Following Influences Pools to Take Profits. BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL, | Associated Press Financial Editor. | NEW YORK, June 19.—Growing | fears that the Stock Market has been temporarily overbought as a Tesult ef the recent series of sharp advances led to extensive selling in today’s session, giving prices a highly irregular ap- pearance. Pools conducted their op- erations with caution because of tha difficulty in obtaining a public fol- lowing and the increasing activities of “bear” traders, but they succeeded in marking up about a score of issues to record high levels. Credit Situation. The midyear credit strain has not vet, begun to make itself felt, and there is a rather widespread hope that recent gold shipments from the Argentine and Great Britain, including withdrawal of another million dollars from Buenos Alres today, would alleviate the situa- tion. Call money renewed unchanged at 7 per cent, and while the supply was not unusually large, money brokers indi- cated that the rate might be maintained throughout the session. Except for the increase from $3 to $4 in the annual dividend on William Wrigley common and the publication of the weekly steel trade reviews, which showed that output was being main- tained at a high rate, there was little in the day's news developments to in- fluence the price movement. 'The steel shares nevertheless were inclined to heaviness, Superior dropping 3% points and Michigan 2. Many of the public utilities reached their highest prices of the year on the late trading, despite the severity of the selling pressure against the oils, steels, radio and other important shares. Standard Gas & Flectric, Philadelphia Co., Pacific Gas & Electric and South- ern California Edison rose 3 to 5 points. The close was irregular. Early Gains Recorded. Upward price tendencies again pre- dominated at the opening. = General Electric showed an initial gain of 2% | points, National Lead 2 a&nd Johns Manville and American & Foreign Power a point each. Allied Chemical and American Can fell back & point on opening transactions. Resumption of gold shipments from Great Britain, which is e: to ease the midyear credit strain, and the high rate of employment reported by the Department of Labor were stressed by commission houses as bullish factors. Excessive heat of the past few days has driven many traders away from the financial district, with the result that early trading was relatively light in volume. Baldwin Locomotive, announcement of a stock split-up in which is shortly, opened at 234 and quicl up to 244, an overnight gain of 11% points. Air Reduction advanced 4 points, National Lead 3 and Johns Manville 2. Public service of New' Jersey cressed par for the first time and American Water Works was Kuslud up a point. North American fell back 2 points on profit-taking. ? International Business Machines was marked up to a new high record and early gains of a point or more were registered by a wide assortment of popular industrials. including Lambert, Mack Trucks, Studebaker, ~ Crucible Steel, Continental Can and American Locomotive. Rails and Oils. ‘Talk of a large rallroad stock holding company revived interest in the rail shares, New York Central and Chesa- peake & Ohio being the early leaders. Houston Oil, which ran up more than 6 points Monday and did not sell yes- terday, fell back 4% points. Murray Corporation, Timken Roller Bearing, Warner Bros. Pictures and American ‘Tobacco B ylelded & point or so. Foreign exchanges opened steady, with sterling cables unchanged.
