Colon, Canal Zone Opening Attractions in ‘Washington Theaters (Continued From Twenty-second Page.) and disappointments of this young pair of lovenpnnd to divulge the outcome of their romance would not be fair to those who intend to see the picture, which is another version of the old Cinderella theme, but, nevertheless, material for a pleasant hour of entertainment. Dialogue is used sparingly, and in the few instances where it is used it can not be said that Miss Banky's or Mr. Hall's voice registers with clarity or with pleasing tonal effects, at least not in the balcony. One scene in a Hun- garian restaurant with sound accom- paniment is particularly good. Pic- torially, Miss Banky, Mr. Hall and Lucien Littlefield fill their roles in & manner which leaves nothing to be de- sired, and Fritzie Ridgeway gives a per- fect impersonation of the reviewer's idea of the type she is supposed to represent. An unusually elaborate stage program, which in itself is a miniature musical comedy consisting of four scenes, is presented by Herbert Rawlinson and the Palace Syne rs, with the assistance of the follo artists: Don Barclay, comedian of musical comedy fi Marietta, an exceptionally agile danc Lilian White, Johnny Dale, John Walsh, Nita Carol and the Gamy-Hale en- semble, who give a unique equine dance that would almost make even a horse laugh at such a caricature of himself. Don Barclay gives a take-off on the David Wark Griffith motion picture of 20 years ago, featuring Lillian Gish, Lionel Barrymore and others of that period. Owing to the length of the features the news reels were omitted at the Saturday evening show. METROPOLITAN—“Noah's Ark.” “Noah's Ark,” proving itself a sturdy vessel, cinematically, sailed Saturday and the trio's rendition of the “Bar- carolle” from “The Tales of Hoffman™ fill out the bill's running time. RIALTO—"The Lone Wolf’s Daughter.” A vague, attenuated hodge-podge of crook tactics, double identities, jewel thefts and hearts of gold scarcely serves to distinguish “The Lone Wolf’s Daugh- ter,” at the Rialto this week, in com- parison ‘o other and much better films of its genre. The whole thing is liter- ally swamped in musical accompani- ment; there isn't a quiet moment. Bert Lytell, a crook with the im- pulses of a_gentleman, plays Lanyard, alias “The Lone Wolf,” father by adop- tion to a maid aManced to a callow. it clean-faced youth. Discovery of his nefarious past would cause the Wolf's daughter ~social embarassment; the film is given over to his attempts to maintain his nicer identity. This he does by fastening the house party jewcl theft upon two wily scoundrels whose criminality he reveals by means of television.” _Inspector Crane, though knowing a lot, keeps the Wolf's secret. All this, plus love interest of the sten- ciled sort, makes the picture. Florence Allen plays the daughter; Gertrude Olmstead is the object of the Lone Wolf's own affections; Robert El- liott is Inspector Crane: Charles Ger- rard and Lilyan Tashman do the crook roles. An excellent Jules Bledsoe song fea- ture, & “Collegian” special, an animated cartoon comedy and newsreels complete the Rialto’s current program. SMUTS’ PARTY LOSES. Hertzog Faction Wins Majority of Eight in South Africa. CAPE TOWN, South Africa, June 17 (#).—The final results of the South African general elections show that Pre- mier J. B. Hertzog’s Nationalist party won a majority of eight over all other parties in the new Assembly. With the wing of the Labor party which sup- ported them in the last House, the gov- ernment supporters hold a majority of 26 over the South African party opposi- tion, led by Gen. Jan Christian Smuts, former premier. AUTOMOBILE, LIABILITY, FIRE, BURGLARY AND TORNADO INSURANCE Thos. E. Jarrell Co. Realtors 721 10th Street NW. Main 766 Lawn Benches —manufaectured sale. There can. by now, be | scarcely anything left of its adventures and symbolism that is unknown to Washington film patrons. One would almost suspect that these last audi-| ences were made up largely of “sec-| ond-timers,” so_generously has thic| megnum opus been attended in the | first two weeks. For the benefit of those who have not_heretofore learned details pertaining to the picture, it may be stated that it represents the effort of the Warner Bros.-Vitaphone organization to give | the world a thrilling photographic ac- | count of the flood, as described in the | sequences based on the World War. From these paralleled cataclysms drawn a moral of world purification, once by a flood of water, and later by a deluge of blood. Every resource of movie stagecraft was adopted to the securing of an impression of grandeur in the film. Any one who has seen it can tell you how well the producers have succeeded. Dolores Costello is starred in the picture with George O'Brien. Michael | Curtiz directed. Darryl Francis Zanuck | LITTLE THEATER—"Othello.” Shakespeare's study of the jealousy that so devours a man's reason as to drive him to murder and suicide is showing at the Little Theater this week, with Emil Jannings in the title role of “Othello.” It is a solidly artistic ver- sion of the story. Jannings’ acting is of such an order as to put this portrait of the Moor well up among the memo- rable list of his characterizations in the German studios, a contrast detrimental to some of his efforts while on Ameri. An | pay rolls. | The Iago of Werner Graus, imagi- | native beyond question, struck at least | one viewer as a little too Mephistophel- | ean an interpretation. One may not say how Shakespeare’s complex characters must be played, as certain Interpreta- | tions have come down to us as tradi- | tional. It is quite possible that Herr | Kraus' projection of Iago as a sort of clowning schemer, a very jumping-jack in some scenes, will be acceptable to most spectators. No one can reasonably | :.yuuut it was not intelligent dramat- ly. Cassio was ably played by Theodore Loos. Ica Lenkeffy's Desdemona was, however, unimpressive, and Lya De Puttl's gifts were submerged in the minor role of Emilia.
