Gladden Dies in Crash—R. H. Rhodes, Pilot, Is Injured. First Lieut. Robert S. A. Gladden, Marine Corps, was killed yesterday in an airplane crash at Cape Haitian, Haiti, while his companion, Second Lieut. Robert H. Rhodes, pilot of the machine, was seriously injured. Lieut. Gladden was the son of Prof. and Mrs. Thomas L. Gladden of Weems Creek, near Annapolis. His father was | at one time head of the Preparatory School of St. John's College, in this city, and was later an instructor in mathe- matics. Lieut. Comdr. Charles T. 8. Gladden, a naval aviator, stationed in Honolulu, is an older brother of the dead officer, while Capt. Arnold Gladden, a younger brother, also is an officer in the Marine Corps. Lieut. Gladden was born at Lexing- ton, Tex., November 26, 1899, and en- tered the service in 1922, having servodi a year in the Reserves. He was sta- | tioned in_Santo Domingo, Cuba and Nicaragual and was cited for the “high ‘morale maintained within his command under difficult conditions,” while serving | with the Marine Expeditionary Force | in Nicaragua. i He is survived by & widow, formerly Miss Mary Davies. whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Davies, reside at 1744 Q street, as well as his parents, two brothers and three sisters.
