RALEIGH, N. C, May 1—State and Federal medical authorities here are investigating a mysterious disease following the deaths of two persons and the serious illness of a third. Neither medical officers nor private physicians have been able to identify the malady, but have pronounced it highly contagious. Dr. Charles O'H. Laughinhouse, State health officer, is- sued a statement which revealed for the first time the symptoms. The first victim was Elbert K. Mc- Rae, a professional base ball player. who was stricken at Rocky Mount. N. C. For several days he was expected to die, but has shown improvement and is still alive.
