ONLY ONEWITAESS N DOUBLE SLAYIG 200 in Cafe When Shooting Started Melted Away in Mad Panic. By the Assocsated Press. CHICAGO, May 1.—Although the| #laying of “Stubby” McGovern and Wil- | liam McPadden took place last New | Year eve in the presence of more than | 200 persons in a crowded South Side cafe, only one witness was available to the State today at the trial of George Masloney for tbe double shooting. The orchestfa at the Granada Cafe was playing, snd the dance floor was filled when Maloney walked over to the table where vern and McFadden, well known gangsters, were seated. ‘When the shooting started there was a frantic rush for exits and places of protection by men and women in eve- ning dress, 3 By the time police arrived, the cafe was empty, except for the two bodies beside the table. Maloney was arrested at the door as he attempted, with smok- ing pistol still in his hand, to walk out. By the testimony of its one witness, the State hopes to prove that Maloney was the first to draw a weapon. No shots were fired by either McFadden or | MecGovern. D. C. AD CLUB LEADS _ EIGHT CITIES IN TEST Carroll Rheinstrom Conducts Con- test in Pulling Power of Copy. A brief outline of the development of advertising in- America during the last decade was given by Carroll Rhein- strom of the McFadden Publishing Co., before a luncheon of the Advertising Club of Washington at the Press Club, Fourteenth and F streets, yesterday. Mr. Rheinstrom proceeded to test the ability of his audience to distinguish between effective and ineffective forms of advertisements by furnishing them with copies of both and taking s vote upon which they thought resulted in the greatest number of inquiries. The tests were similar to those con- ducted by him in eight other cities, in which the general average of the clubs participating was not more than five correct out of 11 samples furnished. The Advertising Club of Washington re- ceived the highest average, with eight of their votes correst. Ernest Johnston, president, presided. - Resume iome-to-l&w York Flight.
