THE EVEN ING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, MONDAY, APRIL 29, 1929. = ! | I Among the Folks in History.—By Gaar Williams 1 ‘ 97 7 f/ QUET AND QUIT IWABBLING MY CHAIR T KNOW THAT ONE MARBLE CAME 0;)1‘ BEDTIME STORIES * Beauty Looks Things Over. ‘The wise search well e'er they decide Upon the place they will reside. —Beauty the Wood Duck. Peter Rabbit couldn't help thinking that Beauty the Wood Duck was well named. “He is the handsomest bird I have ever seen,” thought Peter. Swimming near Beauty was Mr. Quack the Mallard Duck. He was hand- Eome, with his green head, white collar and chestnut breast. Yes, indeed, Mr. Quack was handsome, but compared ‘with Beauty the Wood Duck he was mimost plain. To begin with, Beauty MRS. WOOD DUCK HAD A CREST, BUT NOT SO MUCH OF A ONE AS | BEAUTY. had a wonderful crest. It hung down over the back of his head. His head, including the crest, was green and blue and purple. On each side there was a line of white over the eye, beginning =t the base of the bill, and a similar line below. His breast was a beautiful chestnut. In front of the wings was a mwhite band. His back was a beautiful white marked with . His eyes were red and his feet, ‘when Peter caught a glimpse of them, were A had a crest, but not The Dail . Pool. . Altogether, she was a much plainer small person, but very, very trim indeed. Both she and Beauty ‘were comparatively small ducks. “Are you going to stay, or are you going on north?” asked Peter as Beauty swam in near. “Hello, Peter!” exclaimed Beauty, as if he had seen him for the first time. “We don't know what we are going to do. You see, we have just arrived. Perhaps we will look around a bit any- way.” “This is a splendid place,” declared . Skill. | - !}NSWER TO YESTERDAY’S PUZZLE. Peter enthusiastically, “You won't find any better place farther north.” Mr. and Mrs. Quack chuckled. So did Beauty and Mrs. Wood Duck. “My, how wise we are!” exclaimed Mr. Quack. “Since when have you known all about the north, Peter Rabbit?” Peter looked a little confused. “Well, anyway, this is a nice place,” sald he. “I suppose there are other places just as good, but I don’t believe there are any any better.” “It is_ pleasant here,” said Beauty. “When Mrs. Wood Duck and I have rested & bit we will look around. You know, we are not like the other mem- bers of the duck family. We do not build our nests on the ground.” “What!” cried Peter. “I said we do not build our nests on the ground,” replied Beauty. “We build in a tree and it isn’t always easy to find a tree that is suitable. So we have to do quite a lot of looking around. We have to look things over very closely.” “You won't have any trouble finding a tree here,” replied Peter. “Just look at them all around.” All the ducks began to chuckle again. Peter didn’t understand it. But they offered no explanation and he didn't like to ask what they were chuckling about. Finally Beauty and Mrs. Wood Duck took to their wings and disap- peared over the tree tops. Peter was disappointed. He thought they had left Paddy’s pond for good. But they hadn't. They were simply looking over. (Copyright, 1929.) y Ci'oss-Word Puzzle (Copyright, 1929.) . Non-metallic element. 59. Ruler. 63. Female feline. 64. Pertaining to the side. . Skin disease. 66.
