THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, D. €, MONDAY, APRIL 29. 1929. OPENING ATTRACTIONS IN WASHINGTON THEATERS BELASCO—Balieff’s “Chauve-Souris.” Baliefl’s “Chauve-Souris” has by this time become firmly established in this country. It has been adopted by Americans with all of the American’s | characteristic vigor in adopting things. | It came to these shores in 1922 as something fresh from the old countr with all of the charming naivete, touched with sophistication, of any grown-up immigrant. But the process of Americanization undergone by this child of the Bat Theater, in Moscow, be- comes evident. ‘The program offers such | sketches as “The Organ Grinder” and | “Love Waxes—and Wanes” character- istic of their origin. But the same pro- gram ends with “You Ought to Hear Olaf Laugh” which is a “Dutch scug written by two Americans,” by now only too well known as a radio favorite Nikita B: of mediocrity in any form. Its presen- tations are marked by finish and skill. If last night's opening audience did not | warm up to the spirit of the occasion | during the first half of the evening. such a reaction is easily explained by the fact that one's taste for new things must often be acquired. It may be said to the credit not only of the audience but of the actors that. before the eve- ning_was over, those present were be- ginning to catch on to what it was all about and were enjoying the perform- | ance. When they could understand | what Mr. Balieff, as the ringmaster | and grand factotum. was saying they | enjoved him, too. When they could not | understand, Which was easily half of the time, they were obligingly nice about it. ! Last night’s presentation, which start- | od late. end-d on time by use of the | convenient method of making omissions in the program. But one of the omis- sions was counteracted by the addition of the “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers,” beautifully done and well received Every one will have his own favorites, but “Les Amours de Jean-Pierre,” a burlesque on an old French opera, seemed an easy winner last night, with “The Organ Grinder” a close second. “The Midnight Review,” in which Na- poleon and his marshals review the | ghosts of his armies, would have been more effective with a better system of lighting to develop the dramatic possi- bilities which lie in this fine conception. In addition to the beautiful voices and the dramatic attainments of the Russians, their use of the art of make- | up and costume is a revelation, and | the scenery is always interesting. | | | POLI'S—“Blossom Time.” That hardy perennia, Blossom Time,” is back again, beautiful d popular as ever, as the opening per- formance at Poli's last night indicated. dan as Bellabruna, temperamental and flirtatious wife of Count Sharntofl. easily holds the center of the stage whenever she is present. Of course, there are others, including Billy Kavanaugh, Jack La Mont. Lo- retta Boyes and Bonnie and Joe Mack. all of whom enter into the spirit of the revelry and each in turn contributes vleasing elements. John Charles Gilbert brings to the role of Schubert a satisfactory voice and acting of a high order. He makes the character of the great composer domi- nate the story as it should, and even when he is making progress in his siege of the heart of Mizi, he manages to bring & foreboding that it is all in vain. Genevieve Naegele makes an appeal- ing Mizi and her volce amply fits the role. Pretty and daint; Sheri: % It's Now the | | . Hundreds Are Praising Miller’s Herb Extract for the Wonderful Im- provement It Has | Made in Their | Health. i Are you one of the hundreds that | arise each morning with a bad, dis- | agreeable taste in the mouth, feel | as though you cannot finish your day's work, and when meal time comes feel like you cannot eat a thing? MR. J. K. MOORE | Hundreds of Washington people who were in this condition a few weeks ago are now telling their friends how Miller's Herb Extract (formerly called Herb Juice) quickly relieves these conditions. | Mr. J. K. Moore, who resides at the Portland Hotel, Vermont Ave. and Thomas Circle, found this to be the test medi- cine he ever used and worthy of the highest praise. Mr. Moore, “I am past 68, have traveled pretty much all over the country, but this is the greatest remedy 1 have ever discovered and I have used numbers of different things for gas. indigestion and so- called stomach trouble. I was troubled greatly with constipation, pains in my stomach. headaches, nervous, restless feeling, and was unable to sleep properly at night as I would awake at all hours and have to get up on account of the kidneys I hardly ever felt like eating at meal time and what little I did eat caused me a great deal of suffering from gas and indigestion. This Herb Extract proved to be just the remedy for me, and thanks o it I now feel better in every way than I have for years—no more stomach pains, food agrees with me and I am not trou- bled getting up at nights like I was in the past. I can also truthfully say that it is the best regulator for the bowels I have ever used and really overcomes constipation.
