DEMING TAKES ISSUE WITH REED’S REMARK Missourian’s Statement That Most U. S. Employes Ate Spies and Snoopers Is Assailed. By the Assoclated Press. William G. Deming, president of the United States Civil Service Commission, yesterday took issue with a quotation credited to former Senator Reed in his recent Kansas City address that “a mafority of the 600,000 Federal em- ployes are pald sples, thleves and snoopers.” “The most charitable view I can take of that statement is that Senator Reed was either misunderstood or misquoted,” Mr. Deming said. He cited that a| majority, or about 313,000 of the Federal employes in the executive branches are in the Postal Service, with the re- mainder divided up among the other departments. “And they are not sples, thieves and snoopers,” he asserted. “A few thousand in the Treasury Department and the Department of Justice, no doubt, do some undercover work, but that is part of their duty.” Mr. Deming recalled that some years ago the former Senator made a sweep- ing critics of the classified service and later retracted the remarks. “Per- haps he will again correct an obvious injustice done over half a million worthy men and women,” he concluded. | A Sale That Srpasses Any Event in Our History uaranteed LIVING ROOM SUITES «+.and we will allow you 30 CASH for your old worn- out suite or odd pieces, regardless of their condition. $400.00 All-Over Genuine Mohair 3-Piece Long Bed- Davenport S\ute ~—with wide wood vnnl {ronts and mas T fln- 0] thi ron makes full size “club eanle sl Byany. chate, Pevepubls srioe-illed seat Zushion. $210.00 (Less $30 for your old suite). “75.00 Very Finest Solid Mahogany Hand-Carved Frame, 3-Piece Suite Suyitn, throne or Cox. ; and Chestertlel fin well chair, divan chair. est_im. EDGEWATER GULF, Miss., April 16. —The executive council of the Amer- ican Bankers’ Association was told here yesterday that farm relief problems will be solved by the farmers, bankers and educational associations rather than by national legislation, “And it will be those factors in their own localities that will handle the problems _satisfactorily,” Burton M. sm(th of North Lake, wts chairman of the agricultural committee of the asso- ciation, added. “The farmer must help himself through .increased efficiency and busi- ness methods,” sald Mr. Smith, “and the bankers must become ‘farm minded.’ “Banks in practically all parts of the country are in shape to make loans to deserving farmers,” he continued, “and this is being done.’ Dean H. L. Russell, Mldhon.
