WOMAN’S PAGE’ Flannel Applique THE FLANNEL FLOWERS ARE AS and Wash Goods BY LYDIA LE BARON WALKER. THE Despite the charges of many wise folks, who declare that modem, it- not | be altogether flaming, youth is jazs mad, s most casual survey will reveal the|in fact that many of our young people are seriously education. ‘This is an acquisitive us have the “gimmies” an almost alarmin those, however, who are .not so sure that youth wants a college education as knowledge in the rah-rah sctivities of school. You recall the man who asked a college executive, “Hew many young men are l'-“di'lflt in your school?” “About half of them,” replied the executive. Washington 1is genuinely a' college city. Its universities and academies are equal to those whose traditions are familiar to all. Few, if any, cities can ofter the student the atmosphere and environment that is Washington. Here history and art abound. That the National Capital is becoming more popular each year as a center of edu- cat is evidenced by the number of youths who are coming from all parts of the country to attend our schools. *feveioped 0 ¢ STAR inient upon acquiring an |one very degree. The institutions of learning in these cities have a superb background. ATTRACTIVE AS THE FELT FOR APPLIQUE. ‘The vogue for patchwork applique is pronounced. This trimming is used for ents for children as well as adults. t is a quick and effective decoration that comes to us from.Italy, where it had been employed for long years. To- day let us discuss this work in its use on wash goods, especially with refer- ence to children’s wardrobes. Felt is the favorite material for ap- pliqgue. To such an extent is this true that the term “felt applique” is apt to be used. The advantage of felt is that it does not ravel, being made under heavy pressure of fibers having felting characteristics. In oven felt pressure is combined with weaving, but not in the ordinary or “true” felt. Therefore, felt does not launder well. Because of this trait it is not so well adapted to chil- dren’s as it is to adults’ clothes. This difficulty can be overcome by using & very tightly woven, smooth- face textile between broadcloth, old- fashioned lady’s cloth, which was a textile between broadcloth and fine flannel, flannel, and even the highest grade of outing flannel. The last men- tioned comes in a grade well adapted to ;ltchwork applique, being not unlike felt, although the surface is softer. Any of these will launder excellently. ‘The broadcloth and woolen textiles should not be subjected to hot water nor,_sudden changes of temperature be- tween the first soapy water and the second clear rinsing water. ‘When flannel applique is employed garments for infants and very young children can be trimmed with it and BEAUTY CHATS The Chin Line, Much depends upon the chin line whether a woman appears to be young or passing into the middle aged state. - With a firm smooth line running from chin to throat, a woman may pass for & young girl, while this same face with a broken chin line could be taken for 8 woman 20 years older. The contour of the chin should be one of the great- est importance to a woman after she has fully grown up. Growing girls who are more than usually stout will have a tendency toward a double chin, and often worry over it, but this is just a passing condition of affairs, As they complete their development, this bad disappears along with others. It is possible for almost every woman to keep her chin line youthful for many years after she has attained mid- dle age. It depends upon keeping her tissues and an avoidance of over- weight. If a woman is too stout, she can diet until she is of the proper weight, and in this change at least be subjected to constant washing and ironing without detriment. Wee coats can have rosebuds, especiallly pink rosebuds and blossoms with delicate green leaves of the same material, while outline or chain stitch can form stems, or the flowers can be scattered over the garment without any trailing stems. A tiny cap to match the coat makes a delightful set. Scarfs for youngsters to match hats supply apother good ensemble, or a three-piece set may be made, compris- ing coat, hat and scarf. As it is not necessary to use the ap- plique lavishly, the trimming can be given the articles in a very short time For example, the corners of a collar, the cuffs and pockets with applique motif trimming is sufficlent for the outer garment. The ends of the scarf and one applique motif on the hat can supply chic. A baby blanket of eiderdown flannel with flannel motifs appliqued is_smart. Use white for the eiderdown flanne Make a border of roses, leaves and vin and put a spray of roses in the center. Line and bind the blanket with pink satin or whatever color is used for the roses, Or little blue flowers can be scattered over the entire blanket, in which case the satin binding and lining should be done to match the flowers. A lap blanket for putting over the lap when holding a young baby can be made attractive by trimming with this sort of wash flannel applique. The foundation reducing diet con- tains 1% to 2 pounds of fruits and veg- etables (part of them raw), and this amount usually furnishes sufficlent bulk for elimination. In case it doesn’t, lvise the use of non-medicated agar or psyllium seeds, or both. (You can get these at the drug stores.) No longer is there any dan- gee of running out of ice cubes: Agar is manufactured from a certain seaweed. - Until the last few years all the agar we had was imported from n, but now, I'm glad to say, it is manufactured on our own Pacific Coast and is even superior to the Jap- anese product. Agar is not digested. 1t absorbs considerable water, and thus gives considerable bulk and is of great value in constipation. It can be taken in a large glassful of water or in soups or ceredls. Here's a reducer's cereal— notice the word “reducer’s” and not re- ducing. (No foods are reducing.) Cook one heaping tablespoonful of some ce- real in a small cupful of water, and when cooked for a few minutes take from fire and stir in two or three table- spoonfuls of agar. Massage is also helpful, as it not only breaks up the fatty tissues, so they are the more quickly absorbed, but it helps to build up the muscles so there will be firmness later. Massage is also the proper course to pursue in getting rid of a flabby chin due to sagging facial muscles. Patting is also helpful in either case, because it gets the blood circulating healthfully throughout'the tissues. If there is any looseness of the skin for a time a chin strap will support the muscles, but it is best to get the flesh firm by massage and exercise. An ice rub, or some other astringent treatment, should follow massage until the skin' is taut when only care after that will be needed.
