NEW YORK, April 4—The history of the great American express companies, of which the early annals were embel- lished with Indian skirmishes, took still Co. bought the holdings of the American Express Co. in the former's operating concern, American Railway Express Co., and the Rallway Express Agency, Inc., which now does the actual axpress business, and held its first meet- ing. Adams, which has been an investing company since the war, when American Railway Express was formed to combine the businesses of Adams and American, purchased the 122710 shares of the American Express holdings in the op- erating company, giving it, in addition to its previous holdings, 75 per cent of the stock. No indication as to the purchase price was disclosed, but at the current market price the shares $20,000,000.
