WASHINGTON BANK GAINS ARE NOTED Savage Analysis Indicates-All| Groups Participated in Deposits Increase. ' BY EDWARD C. STONE. ' According to an analysis completed today by Audley A. P. Savage of the National Sa & Trust Co., the made a gain of $4,- ings banks trust companies participated in the increase which came as a decided surprise to many local bankers who had doubted that there ;:m;d \‘)e any ain, act, i"n.her ;!xpecled a falling off. The total dz“‘"'* Rollin A. Wilbar. banks re- ‘p‘;fllzg“ on this latest call by Controller John W. Pole shows a substantial gain over the call lsi!u‘e: :;\ll':bru::y 28, 1928, the first call issued last year. Between the calls of October 3 and December 31 last year there was a de- cline in deposits of $8,939.671.10. The increase of more than $4,000,000 on this last call shows that nearly half of this loss has now been regained. National Banks Lead Groups. o tabulation, which appears el wh'!::: in today's financial section, shows that the national banks had the largest increase in deposits of any of the three groups. ‘The gain amounted to $2,247,- 146.46 over the December 31 figures. Seven national banks reported increases and five had lighter deposits. In the advances an increase in l.hel Riggs National's deposits of $2,467- 826.76 played the largest part. The Co- Jumbia National came second in the group with a gain of $297,653.44, fol- lowed by the Federal-American, with | deposits of $199,827.73. The National apitol was next. 9 Tpodly'u analysis shows that the sav- ings bank group made the secon largest gain in deposits between the December and March calls, an advance of $962,636.02. Seventeen of the 22 savings banks in t’he cn{ re‘ll‘:omd hrm deposits. The larges crease mldm: by the Park Savings Bank, with the Mount Vernon Savings Bank a pretty close second. The Washington Mechanics was third in the list, with the Northeast Savings Bank fourth and the Security Savings & Commercial | next. The trust companies took third place in the list as a group, making a gain in deposits of $806,883.64. Five of the seven trust companies had larger de- posits than on December 31. The American Security & Trust Co. had the largest gain, with the Merchants Bank & Trust Co. second and the ‘Washington Loan & Trust a very close third. Comparison of Last Two Calls. The national banks reported a group total in deposits of $140,837,530.45, in comparison with $138,590,383.99 follow- ing the call of December 31. ‘The savings banks had deposits of $40,105,764.91 in their vaults on March 27 as against $39,143,128.89. ‘The trust companies reported a total gain of $87,256,982.50, while deposits in this group on December 31 totaled $86,450,098.86. Total deposits in all banks in Wash- ington on March 27, 1929, amounted to $268,200,277.86, against the deposit total on December 31, 1928, of $264,183,611.74. | The call of March 27 was a little later than the first call of the year usually comes. In recent years it has come more often the latter part of February or quite early in March. This time the call came after heavy withdrawals for tax payments and local bankers are naturally much pleased with the highly favorable results. ‘Wilbur Optimistic on Outlook. Optimism over the outlook for gen- eral business, with a reservation or two, was expressed by Rollin A. Wilbur, president of the Investment Bankers' Association of America, before the Southern Ohio Investment Bankers. “One reservation I would make ap- plies to the possibility of overextension in the use of credit for speculative pur- poses,” he said. “I do not think such over-extension probable, but it exists as a possibility, if we overplay our pros- perity. Good economics require that we use sound judgment in speculation and investment, that we confine our capital commitments to enterprises shown by careful investigation to be sound and constructive — enterprises which can be expected to increase com- munity buying power and,.consequently, to raise the Nation's standard of living. Mr. Wilbur said he could not recall in his experience so long a period of 924 Adams Millis(3) 30 Adv Rumiey....
