LANE ANTIFREEZE TOREPLACE WATER “thylene Glycol to Cut Size of Radiators and Increase Speed. Ty the Assoclated Press. Ethylene glycol, common base for; many anti-freeze solutions, was an- nounced today as the chemical de- veloped by Army engineers to replace wvater as an airplane engine cooling fluld. Use of the chemical is fore- seen as_opening an unlimited field for future development of water-cooled en- ines. ¢ ‘The fluid, which is clear, colorless and ddorless, boils at 387 degrees fahrenheit. 1t is the first and simplest of polyhydric alcohols, and its constituents can be ob- fained on the open market at reasonable prices. » . Although simple in its composition, fhe chemical was found to be the most satisfactory liquid for cooling airplane engines after six years of research by Air Corps engineers in the Wright Fleld laboratories near Dayton, Ohio. Benefits Anticipated. Use of the fluid, which is said to make possible a 75 per cent reduction of weight and air resistance offered by the present-day, water-filled radiator, is ex- pected to solve a problem that has been perplexing aeronautical engineers since the Wright brothers constructed their first plane, The cumbersome, heavy radiator necessary for water-cooled engines can be cut to one-fourth its present size and weight by use of the chemical| cooler. The result is an increase of speed, reported by Army engineers to| be 11 miles an hour on a standard pursuit plane, and a proportionate in- crease in pay load. Because of its very high boiling point, 175 degrees above that of water, ethy- fene glycol, as a cooling fluid ‘makes | possible high speeds without over- heating. Speed Increase Seen. It is estimated that multi-engined planes used for transporting passengers on commercial airplanes will be able to increase their speeds as much as 10 per cent and their pay loads by sev- eral hundred pounds through use of the chemical fluid. Only minor changes are required to make present water-cooled engines suit- LO0OCHAOCHA 2+ \\ nhg for using the chemical fluld. Joints antd packing glands must be made tighter and a closed cooling system used. Fuel used in such engines will be treated with an extra amount of benzol of tetraethyle lead to offset any added tendency toward detonation.” LEADER GANDHI FINED FOR DEFYING POLICE Head of Nationalists in India As- sessed 36 Cents on Charge of Destroying Foreign Goods.
