Removal of Bodies to Be Begun ‘When Graves Are Located, Vet- eran Commander Announces. By the Associated Press. KANSAS CITY, Kans, March 18— Bodies of American war dead buried in} Northern Russia and Siberia are to be removed to the United States as soon as the graves are located, it was an- nounced today by Eugene P. Carver, jr., commander-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Carver said the Russian people's commissariat for foreign affairs has agreed to co-operate with the veterans’ organization in locating the graves and removing the bodies, which are those of soldiers who fell on the eastern front in the World War. The veterans’ organization took action for the removal of the bodies, ‘as the War Department could not do so be- cause of the absence of diplomatic re- lations between the United States and the Soviet government, Mr. Carver said. PAZO » PELES Sir Henry MacKinnon Led City's Imperial Volunteer Regiment in South African Siege. By the Associated Press. LONDON, March 18.—Gen. Sir Henry MacKinnon died yesterday at the age of 77. During the Boer War he took the City of London Imperial Volunteers, the regiment raised by the city, to South Africa. He was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the Queen's medal. Sir Henry entered the army in 1870 gnd first served in the Grenadier Guards. He was a director of auxiliary forces from 1905 to 1908 and until 1910 he was director general of the territorial force. Thereafter he was commander- in-chief of the western command until 1915, when he became director of the Iec{gififiln& war, office. He was knighted n A MAN’S BODY IS FOUND. Clemson College Attache Missing Since October 31, 1928. CLEMSON COLLEGE, 8. C., March 18 (#).—An escort from Clemson Col- lege today will bring here the body of | Archie C. Stearns, staff sergeant, United States Army, which was yester- day taken from the Savannah River at ks point near Elberton, Ga. 40 miles down the river. Sergt. Stearns, who for | the last three years had been stationed | at a post at the college, had been miss- | { ing since October 31, 1928. The body was identified by papers found in the pockets of the sergeant’s coat and by a ring and watch. An in- quest, held yesterday at Elberton, Te- sulted in a verdict by a coroner’s jury that Stearns had been murdered by an unknown party. This wasbased on tes- timony of a physician that the Army officer had not been dead more than two weeks and by the fact that the major portion of the head was missing. Allen B. Pond, Chicago, Dead. CHICAGO, March 18 (#).—Allen B. Pond, 70 years old, prominent archi- tect, civic leader and one of the orig- inal trustees of Hull House, noted social center, died yesterday of pneumonia, Mr. Pond, a graduate of the University of Michigan, was a former faculty member of that institution.
