Government Paper and Foreign Dollar Groups Also Rauy BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 18.—With today's advances in U. S. Government issues and in a moderate number of foreign dollar obligations, it is possible to trace to Secretary Mellon's statement of last Thursday a covering movement that has rallied Treasury certificates from 1 and South American bonds an equal { amount. Elsewhere there has not been much change except in sentiment. Offerings that were hanging over the market be- fore Thursday have been withdrawn, which has led to some strengthening in bid prices and has increased the ef- fect of the one strong market feature; namely, a_scarcity of supply. A few of the corporation bonds with coupons between 5 and 6 per cent and selling at a discount have made small recoveries. On the other hand, there has been almost no improvement in the 4 and 4'> per cent mortgages, with scores of them closing Saturday at the lowest of the year and a few more today sclling under last week's level. ‘The most reasonable expectation has been that foreign bonds would rally because a majority were lower than they have been in two years and be- cause of their high return. The re- | covery so far has been greatest in Ger- | man municipal and industrial issues, although today there was decided ir- regularity in the former. Australlan 412s and 5s, some of the Argentine 6s and the much-depressed Colombia Mortgage Bank issues were firmer. The 1tier market has bren 80 thoroughly saturated during the past year with new offerings that it will take some time for it to absorb the present float- | ing supply. It was reported today that Brazil will borrow $75,000,000 in Lon- don in order to complete her currency stabilization plan. Strong features among the con- vertibles were American International 515s with a rise of 1!5 points, An: o8 above 101 and International Cement 5s, | which held around 110. International | Telephone 4155 and Atchison 412s were | quieter. St. Paul adjustments were more active than for some time at the | highest price in several weeks. POTATO MARKET DULL. NEW HAVEN, Conn., March 18.— Motor stock led the sharp advance in the common industrials which began on the New York Stock Exchange Wed- nesday and con- tinued with in- creased strength Thursday and Fri- day. The copper and oil groups were the only others to reach sufficient heights to bring their level for the weck above that of the week before. Rails and utili- ties did not show up as well as the industrials, al- though they, along with all the com- mon stock groups, registered their Jow point on Tues- day and advanced consistently during the remainder of the week. | The accessories made a brave show- ing. After declining more than 10 index points during the week preceding last Tuesday, this group turned about and | regained practically the whole of the | decline in three days—notquite enough, | however, to bring its index for the| week up to that of the week before. Radio again gave a spectacular per- ormance. Advances in the olls were the most general of any group, but not | of sensational amount. The coppers were particularly strong, with Miami | considerably in the lead. Several stocks of the food groups were weak, Ward “A” severely so. Speculative Issues Rise Most. The more speculative common in- dustrial stocks registered the sharpest | rise in last week’s market, reaching | the highest point in more than three | | years. Of the three grades classified accord- ing to Moody’s ratings, the next strong- est were the first grade or “investment” stocks, although their rise was only a fraction of an index point, while the | third grade group went nearly 5 index | points _higher. Radio. Miami_Copper, Irving Fisher. Goodyear Tire and Yellow Truck were among the strongest individual issues in this group. Below are shown index numbers of prices of common industrials on the! New York Stock Exchange, arranged in classes derived from Moody's ratings. 1st and 3rd Grade Grade Grade (Invest- (Inter- (Specu- ment) mediate) lative) (1926-100) 82223533 ":;::;:;;;; 33753355383 bittstatn i it < o 2 :gsu.mna—qq- G zn “(Mar 20) (Mar 29) Low (26-'29) . 2.1 “'(Apr'26) (Apr’ 8 (May zc; | Turnover of Stocks Declines. ‘The volume of transactions on the “big board” was substantially less last | week than the week before. The average daily value of common industrials changing hands declined 20 per cent to $268,700,000. The turnover of all stocks, preferred and common, was at the rate of $301,600,000 per day, 24 per cent less than the preceding week.
