24 @ REBUKE OF PASTOR DECLARED “JOKE” Self-Styled Evangelist Says Remark on Cigarette Was “Mere Pleasantry.” {lxp!ninlng his alleged denunciation %‘,’g:\'. John J. Queally, rector of the opal Church of the Transfigura- tion, as a “mere pleasantry,” Herbert G. Knight, self-styled personal evange- bst, denied he was an anti-cigarette cru- sader in the Police Court today when srraigned on a charge of soliciting with- out a permit. ho chnrge was lodged against him &s the o ult of a dispute which Jie had with the rector concerning spehaing of money for tobacco rather than Jibles. Knight, calling at the hom? of Rev. Queally last Friday, attempted to sell the minister copies of the New Tcsta- ment, to be used by members of his congregation. He was informed by Rev. Queally that he did not have money for such pure poses, Knight said, and the latter then’ replied that if the minister did not spend money for cigarettes, such as he was smoking, hz might be better able financially to puchase bibles. Rev. Queally, angered by tha re- mark, is said to have asked the mis- sionary worker who had given him autherity to lecture on the evils of smoking. Knight replied that the min- ister was setting a “bad example” for the younger goneration, and left the house. According to Knight, he later met Dr. Queally on the street and “received a glare like the reflecticn of an iceberg.” The rector passed, but soon returned with a policeman, whom Knight drove to the thirteenth precinct, where he de- posited §5 collateral. Unable to appear in court Saturday, as he is a Seventh Day Adventist, XKnight was arraigned today. He in- formed Judge Gus A. Schuldt that his remark had been humorous, and that he had not known it was necessary to secure a permit. He gave his personal bond and was released. LINDY'S DAY'S HOP 10 BE 600 MILES Flying Colonel, on Way Back to U. S., to Go From Ma- nagua to Belize Today. BOSTON, February 11 (#).—Col. Charles A. Lindbergh arrived at Belize, British Honduras, at 11:50 am., Eastern standard time, today from Managua, Nicaragua, the Trop- ical Radio Company reported in a _radio message received here. U By the Assoctated Press. MANAGUA, Nicaragua, February 11.— A 600-mile flight across three countries to Belize, British Honduras, was today’s stunt for Col. Charles A. Lindbergh. The route was, in the main, the re- verse of that which he followed last week when he brought air mail here from Miami, Fla, and continued to Cristobal, Panama. He was not sure, though, whether he would stop today at Tela, Honduras, one of the stops on the trip from Miami. Accompanying Col. Lindbergh on his return fight to the United States is an escort piane piloted by Raymond J. Merritt. Another companion is Lieut. Christian Schilt, Marine Corps aviator, who is going to Miami to become district superintendent of the Pan-American Airways mail route, Col. Lindbergh has with him 803 pounds of mail from Panama to the United States. The two planes, flying from Cristobal, swooped down out of a clear sky yester- day at 1:35 p.m. fully three hours ahead of the time they were expected. The flyers drove up to the United States legation in a Marine Corps automobile long before Charles C. Eberhardt, Min- ister, had even intended starting for the flying field to greet them. Stops for today's trip were at David, Panama, and Punta Arenas, Costa Rica. 184 HOSPITALS AND INSTITUTIONS ARE USING FATHER JOHN'S MEDICINE FOR COLDS AND BODY BUILDING Father John’s Medicine is now being used in 184 hospitals and insti- tutions from coast to coast in the United States and Canada.
