N, 11,314,144 ASKED IN OFFIGES'BIL - $12,958,582 Increase—Al- most Half Billion for Vet- erans’ Bureau. Appropriations totalling $541,314,144 for the independent offices of the Fed- eral Government were recommended to Congress today. This is $12,958,582 more | had than the current appropriation, and an increase of $396,214 over the budget Tecommendations. The increase was largely in the al- Jotment for militery and naval insur- ance and hospital facilities. In addition to the amount carried in this bill, there is automatically appro- priated from the Treasury $107,456,999 in permanent, annual and indefinite ap- propriations for the same Federal es- tablishments. For salaries of employes in the execu- tive office, the budget increase of $7,040 has been allowed for increases under the Welch act. $2,000,000 For Arlington Bridge. For the Arlington Memorial Bridge, $2.000,000 is included. For the Bureau of Efficiency for salaries and expenses, $223830 is carried, which is an increase of $13,830 over current appropriations, but a de- crease of $3,950 under budget estimates. An increase of $3,800 for an additional chief investigator was not allowed be- f of the bureau said he the budget for this item. vil Service Commission, the bill an increase of $69,790 for the office force over current ex- penses, which is $3,060 less than the budget recommendation. There is also an increase of $1,360 for examination of presidential postmasters. Radio Commission Cut. | For the Federal Radio Commission | gswm of $164,440 is recommended. This a reduction of $199,587, under cur- | rent appropriations, of which $193,120, 1s in traveling expenses. For the Federal Trade Commission a total of $1,277,760 is recommended, which is an increase of $229,760, but $12,000 less than the budget recom- mendations. For the General Accounting Office $311,000 is granted in salary increases, but there is a reduction of $16,000 in this item under budget recommenda- tions. For public buildings and public parks in the National Capital, the bill carries a total of $2,888061, which is an in- crease of $235,081. The bill carries a salary increase of $301,081, and a re- duction in general expenses of $66,000. For the Smithsonian Institution the ries $499,975,000, of $14,415,000. Housing Employes Reduced. For the Housing Corporation the cur- rent appropriation carried funds for 16 employes in the Washington office, but the corporation has been able to re- duce that number to 12 for the present year and proposes a further reduction to 11 employes for 1930. The estimates also contemplate a reduction in the field force. For the Government Hotels occupy- ing the area between the Capitol and the Union Station, soon to be déveloped as a parkway, the budget estimate of, $348,000 is $55,250 less than the cur- rent appropriation. & During the current fiscal year there been an administrative reduction of 50 positions on the pay roll, resulting in a savirg of more than $25,000. There have been corresponding reductions in the tax Incidental items. Collections for 1928 totaled $358,096.74 and the disbursements were $336,615.29, an ex- cess of receipts over disbursements of $21,481.45. On December 19 last the Government Hotels had besn in operation for 10 vears, and up to June 30, 1928, had put into the Treasury of the United States $202,149.26 in excess of all appropria- tion’ disbursements incident to their operation. o B Edison Due at Winter Home.
